Default Probation Officers and the Roster/Magazine Limitations

Hey all. I'm sure this question has been addressed numerous times in the past but the search function and google have failed me again. I'm currently going through the hiring process to become a Probation Officer. Our department has both armed and unarmed POs and if given the option I would prefer an armed position. I was wondering if as a PO I am a peace officer as defined by the state, then will I therefore be able to purchase off roster pistols and carry 10+ mags in my duty firearm? Hopefully this will be a quick and painless question. Thanks in advance for the help.

It depends on the status of the job. If you have "peace officer" powers, then the answer is yes. If no peace officer powers, then no.

As Ron stated, it is up to the department to appoint you as a "peace officer" under PC 830.5. If that is the case, then you are good to go. Being an armed deputy or an unarmed deputy has no bearing on your ability to purchase off roster guns and standard capacity magazines. It the status. Good luck, Ive been with my Probation department for quite a while and enjoy every day. If you have any questions about Probation work, pm me. stay safe
