If you had a couple World Wars go through your neighborhood, you just might be inclined to put something away for another "rainy day".

Sad that this was turned over to the authorities.

There was something on a FB group last week about an MP40 being found during roof repairs in Poland as well

Found the post and it was an STG44

Odd as I remember commenting "What MP40?" Hmm. I'm loosing my mind, lol

I have a friend whose father was in the German Army. According to him, they wrapped a lot of stuff in oil cloth and buried them in the woods throughout Germany. You have to wonder what condition they are in after all these years.

One of my neighbors is a late 80's German guy. He was a teen in Germany at the end of WWII. He told me he and his buddies would go hunting in the woods for abandoned German army arms. He said they would have a great time shooting the rifles, and on a few occasions found abandoned Panserfaust anti tank rockets an shoot them at trees. He said he also found many hand grenades, which they also would have fun throwing into a local pond...

When they were done with the rifles they would also throw them in the local pond.

What a cool find. I wonder if it was packed away and forgotten about by a Polish resident or if a German soldier hid it before they were captured or surrendered.

SVT, I'll bet your neighbor has some great stories to tell.

Hopefully the authorities won't bury it again. I just watched Gun Stories and the segment was on the SVT40. Found it really interesting for a non-milsurp guy. They mentioned finding a cache of 500 SVT40's in Syria??? Not a clue how they got there... They also compared the 40 to the AK47, and the similarities between the two... even though Kalashnikov denys ever seeing the 40.

Europe is full of professional relic hunters. The paths of the German Army from Stalingrad to Normandy are well known and likely well picked over by now. Weapons would be in very poor condition and subject to confiscation, but helmets, medals, and other scraps are always popping up for sale on the militaria boards. Just about everything that is legitimate nazi marked has collector value.

I am just wondering why the STG-44 could be produced in significant numbers by slave laborers on late war worn out assembly lines with depleted raw materials from day and night bombing, and vast enemy forces closing in from the east and the west....

And in 2017 we are still waiting for a manufacturer to make a true reproduction of one that is at least somewhat affordable, available, and would actually work properly.

Indeed that would be the case in most situations. But by mid-1944 the reich was crumbling everywhere, and they certainly did not have endless resources. I don't know exactly when the STG was rolled out, but I'd assume very late war since much of the historical footage of it in action appears to be in the late war period, around Market Garden or so on to the battle of Berlin. Just like the ME262, huge advancements in technology, but too little too late.

I could be wrong, but that is my opinion.

I bet there are hundreds of thousands of weapons stashed away. Most of these are likely to be forgotten as the original ‘stasher’ would have been deceased by now.

Is there any indication that the originals always worked properly? I'd still like to see one fired prone on flat ground.

I spent 2010-2014 stationed in Germany and deployed alongside the Luftwaffe 2012-2013. A very good German friend of mine, a master sergeant in the Luftwaffe, told me "you're naive to think the little old lady in the country home doesn't have her Father's Luger wrapped up in a drawer". Apparently it's quite common in the rural areas.

What StG44? What's that? I found this broken stick, is that what you're asking about, Mr. Government?

Even though guns are almost impossible to 'legally' own in Mexico....One would be surprised to know how many Mausers from their colorful past ( Viva Villa! ) are hidden in the floorboards.... Especially in los campos..

Man that is one sweet gun.

And hidden with two full mags...I would have gone out in the back 40 and used them up!

Mine was found in a barn in Alabama -
the son of the vet who stood it there sixty years earlier sliced the receiver and sold it to me.
(He started a thread on the find on a collecting forum. the rifle was caked in powered clay and barely visible.)

After being rebuilt (at great expense, lol, bent receiver, bent barrel, destroyed internals) as a "semi-auto-blank-only rifle", it burned through 3000+ rounds of blanks on the last film - (see my avatar)

I see it as a way to have a peaceful second life - although one shouldn't get sentimental about guns, you do wonder what it would say, if it could talk.

I recall watching a documentary on the ME262.....it could have been available for service a few months earlier.....except the Fuhrer wanted the plane to also be able to serve as a fighter bomber....so, revisions had to be made. Either way...it was too late

Can't say about now but I recently read a book about the students who dug tunnels from West Berlin to East Berlin 62-63 to rescue freedom seekers. The book mentioned the WW2 weapons that the tunnel diggers had no problem sourcing to arm themselves with in their underground forays into East Berlin including MP40s and an MG42. Seems a lot of WW2 German weapons were floating around West Germany in the 60s.

Doesn't matter if they had the ME262 a few months earlier, Germany was just about out of fuel by late '44. Germany was producing fighter aircraft up to the end of the war but had no fuel for them and no pilots to fly them.

In Italy, every Sunday at the local Flea Market you have at least 4 or 5 vendors trying to sell all the demilled stuff and relics they found in the woods the week before.. I would assume the rest of Europe is the same.

A friend found a stashed 9mm pistol in his 1940s-era garage here in Los Angeles a few years back.
It happens.

Foreigners think they are pretty bad a@@ for having a pistol tucked away somewhere.

They'd have a stroke if they saw what's in the average American gun owner's safes.

Since guns are so regulated here in the USA, even non gun owning Americans freak out at the sight of guns.

That's more of a California phenomena. You can always tell a Californian when they walk into a gun shop or if they see an open carry out of state. Californians mostly pee themselves like a beaten puppy dog. Pathetic.

I think that depends on where you live. Lots of gunfire here today just after sunrise. Guys walking around dressed in camo and carrying shotguns.

Nobody freaking out. Of course, duck and quail season opened today.
