No. There was a whole lot of applicants who weren't qualified , didn't show up, or couldn't pass the test. The CHP needs people. They're looking to get two academy classes of 150 cadets.Only way to do that is if applicants can get through the process.

Statistically, most applicant pools will only give you 1 percent that have the ability to make it all the way through to the academy. Once those folks make it to that point, a portion of those will refuse the position. Of those that do accept and go to the academy, 20 percent will fail. An applicant pool of 10,000 may only yield 60 graduates from the academy. Another 10 will fail their probationary period so a department will end up with 50 good officers.
I believe CHP received 27,000 applications last time they opened. That may give them 100 officers. I completely understand why they are opening the application process again. On a side note, I hear the number one disqualifier at their academy is the timed 30 second tire changing exam. Not many recruits come in with that knowledge so they have to drill regularly for that Learning Domain. LoL, just kidding my State brothers. Good luck on bringing more great folks to your department. Stay safe everyone. |

Well that is a rookie task, rookie. One of the trainees I terminated, had issues with it.

Best of luck to anyone applying.
I went through a 3 year process trying to get hired with CHP. Passed the written, PAT, QAP, cleared backgrounds and then was put into a holding pattern. Finally heard back almost a year later and had a new investigator, went and did a second (new) PAT, cleared medical and then all of a sudden couldn't pass the same background I had passed the previous year despite nothing changing. Be prepared to do anything at the drop of a hat for as long as it takes (like, be at a place 150 miles away tomorrow morning). |

It's a lottery really. So many great applicants and it just does not happen for a lot of folks. Even more so in the Fire Services. Maybe you are tall and blonde and named Craig? Maybe the oral board leader had a tall, blonde kid named Craig that beat him up and took his lunch in school. So many variables. Just prepare yourself well and take a chance. Who knows.....

Rookie? Doubt it. You still work the jails so that says it all or you can't hack it on patrol. Junior member on calguns does not equate to rookie. Sorry.

Question, I went into the chp website and looked at when they are opening up the hiring process. On the website it says they are opening up the 12-14 for cadets. Is that what the chp call their applicants? I know most agencies call their new hires trainees and sheriffs it's deputy trainee.
Just checking I want to apply but dust know if it was for actually being a chp officer or for their explorer program. |

I'm applying. I made a very serious error in judgement last time and ran a full marathon the week before the physical agility test. Hip flexors were annihilated and I failed the situps by 2 reps. Won't happen this time.
Currently have 5 other apps out. One ride-a-long scheduled and my second oral interview is next month. CHP is my number one choice. I loved boot camp and would be thrilled to have the opportunity to go a 6 month live-in academy. Also, the smokey bear covers look a lot more professional than the bus driver caps imo. I did reasonably well on the PELLETB (just under 70 - I was told by a CHP officer this is a good score?) and was told it would be waived. USMC0621, do you know if this is true? Also, when will the begin scheduling written/physical agility testing? Last time there was a 3 month gap between the initial application and the written test. Thanks!

you can't apply for what area you want to work in. that all gets sorted out at the academy. most people end up going to a metropolitan area like LA. some get lucky and actually go where they want

Applicants generally go to metropolitan areas (LA or Bay Area), or wherever the dept needs officers. Every academy dream sheet is different. There is what is called a "dream sheet" that cadets get in the academy. The dept figures out where they need new officers and they put the list out and you list all spots, starting at #1 that you want to go. Your last 4 of your social security # plays a part, 9999 would be the best to have, 0000 and your are going to do break in, in the South Los Angeles office. Now if you own a home or have kids in school and there is an office within 50 miles that is taking cadets this trumps the SS #. There is more to this and if you get to this point you can look at all the way cadets are prioritized to go to which office. Once you are off of break in you can put in for a transfer (one year as an officer), and you get priority based on badge #, with some exceptions.

Misread..sorry. I left because at that time, CHP was on 8 hour shifts and the days off were fairly random. I had decent seniority, but I could still get bumped from days-swings-graves month to month.

What exactly makes the CHP (and LAPD for that matter) academy/CA POST so different from other agencies that they do not accept transfers?
Even other state CA LE agencies accept CA POST standards alone. |

I can't speak for LA, but CHP is big on uniformity, and they have especially high standards with Traffic Collision Investigation and DUI enforcement. With a broad spectrum of police academies across the state (and some with pretty low standards), CHP has all of their people statewide on virtually the same standards, training and expextations.

Ugh that sounds pretty terrible. My days off are different every week but at least I know what days I'll have off and can plan ahead.

Shortly after I left, CHP (at least in my area) went to 12 hour shifts, with a much more predictable schedule. I think it was at least quarterly if not 6 months. And, of course, they got a huge raise after I left...
