Did you read the back of your Formby's? Mine says it's a blend of tung and "other penetrating oils." Looks great, seems to be water-resistant.

It says it has Varnish in it

Not sure if there's a location by you in lincoln, I go to the one in San Carlos. But woodcraft stores carry 100% tung oil.

The MSDS shows formby's tung oil contains 70% mineral spirits doesn't list any of the other ingredients.

All the guys on the Parallax C&R Forums talked about how great Behr's #600 Scandanavian Tung Oil Finish is. I drove all the way from Riverside to an Ace Hardware in Norco for it because it was the closest retailer that had it.
The stuff is good. From what I understand, Behrs #600 is discontinued. If you want pure tung oil, also known as China wood oil, you should be able to find it in generic cans at any home improvement store. In my opinion, tung oil doesn't really do much for looks. All it does is treat the wood. If the color of the wood is going to change from pure tung oil, it won't happen for decades. If you're trying to get the same look as the wood on 1903A3 or M1 Garands, the arsenals used a specially formulated tung oil finish, not pure tung oil.

I've had nothing BUT LUCK with Formby's- both the low and high gloss.
If you do want it darker, especially the "military look" of the garands then you outta try chestnut ridge <alcohol-based> stain before using the tung: they claim the alcohol based ones will go right through oils- but I've yet to try that route. And oh, if you do go with Chestnut ridgel...it is reddish, a lot of peeps will cut it with brown. this will give you the idea of Formbys and straight Chestnut EDIT: and Oh...5.4 mil SA before anyone asks! And No, she aint for sale!!!!

Give these guys a try http://www.realmilkpaint.com/oil.html
I've used this stuff on gun stocks, cutting boards, ax handles . . . it leaves a slightly shiny finish, or you can hit it with a little 0000 steel wool to give it a nice matte finish.

I see lots of threads about 100% pure tung oil and peoples quest to find it. Does anyone actually use 100% tung oil? chances are you have to cut it with something thats why normally you find it in a pre blended form.

EXACTLY.... and the dry time for 100% is DAYS...not hours or 1 day but DAYS. I cut the formby's STARTING with 75% MS//25% tung, then next round is 50/50 then down to 25%MS//75% Tung and end with 100% tung (Formbys that is..which is NOT 100% true legit Tung without additives.)

Dunno, I've heard peeps do it both ways...my thoughts were/are with it cut it would penetrate deeper (Or so I hope) but people DO use multiple coats...might wanna Steel wool it inbetween to smooth it out and re-open possible pores.

I didn't cut the Formby's at all, didn't have a problem with the stuff soaking right in, either! It took 3 or 4 coats. Steel wool in-between coats, +1. Just follow the directions, and keep rubbing. Err...

I was originally a bit upset with the Home Depot folks because they said the product didn't exist even though I had a print out right from the Behr website, a company they own! I found it odd they carried other brands of so called Tung Oil but not the one from their own people. Ha-ha! |

Is it the white bottle labeled "Jasco"? If so, then it is the real stuff. Opinions always vary, but I prefer unpolymerized tung oil on wood. Good wood grain shouldn't need dyes or stains imho. |

After I told the Manager to Call Behr Directly. I ordered the 6 cans, waited about 3 weeks then got a Letter in the mail from Home Depot stating that the EPA does not allow it in CA.
