Well... He must have received his orders...

Because Marines are not allowed to die without permission!

As he also said...

Today, you are Marines. You're part of a brotherhood. From now on, until the day you die, wherever you are, every Marine is your brother... always remember this: Marines die. That's what we're here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever, and that means you live forever.

RIP Gunny, we lost a great guy who represented the average American. Loved his work and his comedic view on life.

Sadly enough another "Gunny" my former next door neighbor's dad passed a few weeks ago. He was on Bougainville, Okinawa, and at the Chosen in Korea with Chesty Puller.
When he came to visit I took some of my collection to show him, Arisakas (I had a deep respect for them he said) 1903 Springfield which he earned an extra $5.00 per month for shooting Expert, an M1 Carbine, "good in the jungle but hated them in Korea", a USGI 1911A1 and a Garand which he when he picked it up got the look of meeting a long lost friend. He went through the "Stack Arms Drill" with us. Wish I had had more time to talk to him.

More than once. And also every wall locker dumped out. And two bunks taken apart and tossed out the window of the 2nd floor along with their mattresses, covers, sheets, and blankets.

We loved those DS by the time we were done.

Vaya con DĂ*os, Gunny. From this Doggie to you, a Gyrene, you have my salute and respect.

I saw R. Lee on a couple of occasions at the Big Sandy shoots. He was there filming segments for one of the shooting programs he hosted. As you can imagine, being at a public shoot, he was interrupted frequently by fans for a word, photo or autograph. At all times we has patient, approachable and took time to talk to everybody who engaged him. . . even if it meant the crew had to wait a moment for him to get into position. Very impressive.
