So, I've done quite the 360 with tactical gear. I started wearing an Eagle CIRAS, then moved to a Shelback Banshee. I tried out a FirstSpear Strandhogg, then "upgraded" for a Crye JPC with a Hogg cummerbund. Finally I downgraded to an SKD SOHPC and then came full circle back to an Eagle LE Plate Carrier. Out of all of my vests I've used other than the CIRAS, I really appreciate the simple fit and finish of the EPC.

I've really admired the designs of scalable plate carriers and the modular panels so I decided to design one for my own plate carrier that is considered dated. Using my design my old Eagle Plate Carrier can now accept any aftermarket panel/placard.

Using my universal adapter design, I can easily accommodate both AR15 and AK47 mags without having to switch pouch setups.

Avid impressionist... this is my newest acquisition. Came in straight from the land down under yesterday. Obvious wear & tear from the SASR operator who had it before me. Definitely cant wait to crank off some rounds wearing it.

Also oldie but goodie Mich2000 with 2006 mfg. date. Had the famous 'sand' color, but being an idiot i went ahead and painted it for bb use. Topped off with a Autogated Anvis tube sitting in pvs14 housing.

Check that privilege

Default New Carrier : Fort Redut (Korean Woodland)

So, I recently acquired a new plate carrier Fort Redut (Korean Woodland). Again not US stuff as I'm a bit of a collector. Its pretty common knowledge that Russian carriers carry 2 front plates and 2 rear plates, scaled just slightly to provide mobility. However, this one was a bit of a oddball piece.

It was fully kevlar'd front and back... but carried only 2 plates, both in the front. Special purpose built I'm sure... on any other camo'd version the carrier (VSR/Flora/Etc.) they came with 4 plates.

Anywho, photos attached.

Very interesting.

I've been playing with plate shapes and design and produced something similar except one piece...

Is it ergonomic to the body?

Ergonomic? I honestly prefer russian scaling 2 piece armor over US SAPI/ESAPI anyday. My FORT defender 2 (4 plates) weighs just as much as my Eagle MBAV (2 ceramic sapis). The fact that the armor can 'bend and fold' as you move really does help out when you're running and even shooting from the prone (as you're able to arc your back just enough to get your magazine to rest on the floor and keep a good profile).

Honestly, the plates (fully laid out in place) are longer than US medium SAPI plates. Stretching from just shy of my collarbone to right above the crook of my pelvic bone (note I'm 6'0") a single plate that long would definitely NOT be comfortable as you would not be able to bend over / crouch over / get up out of the prone.

This design has been updated for the modern Defender 2, where they forgoed the lower extended portion of the lower plate to shave weight. I'll post up a armor/plate review & side by side tomorrow morning.

EDITED:

Carriers Side by side ( Fort Redut / Fort Emerald Defender II Molle / Eagle MBAV Khaki ) :

Carriers & Plate Side by side ( Fort Redut / Fort Emerald Defender II Molle / Eagle MBAV Khaki ) :

Plates Side by side (F/B) ( Fort Redut / Fort Emerald Defender II Molle / Eagle MBAV Khaki ) :

Plates Side by side (F Only) ( Fort Defender II / Ceramic SAPI / Fort Redut ) :

Plates Side by side (F Only) ( Fort Defender II / Ceramic SAPI )

As you can see, the combined plates are indeed 'longer' when put together, however since they overlap, they are JUST about the same size as a SAPI. However theres no need for the vertical curve as the plates are 2 piece & form to your body as needed.

Question for the assembled experienced minds we have here - is there a carrier that can use the soft armor from say, Safariland or Point Blank vest?

I recently acquired two new-in-wrapper Level II vests, a Safariland and a Point-Blank, both a couple years old, but stored correctly and as new as you can get.

I'd like to be able to use the inserts from either one in a carrier so I can have attachments, mag holders, etc.

Is there such a item?

Thanks

Why not use them as backers with which ever hard armour plate you choose?

Never mind I misread that they are actual VESTS

Depending on the cut of the vests (balcs being most universal) you can cut out the soft armor inserts and actually insert them into whichever carrier can fit it. Most carriers that accept soft armor inserts are plug & play, just like plates. You just need to know if the carrier accepts the same cut as the safariland & point blank.

Okay, I think I understand. Don't even have to cut them; the soft armor inserts come out of the dark blue cloth carrier so the carrier can be washed. Thanks

Default Fort Emerald Defender II Molle

Received plates for my Fort Defender II Molle a few weeks ago, just never went ahead and show it off or whatever. This is the latest model of the Defender II series vest in the discontinued 'emerald' color scheme, and this particular one is a 'issued' carrier (can tell by the stitching on the molle, very thick & heavy pattern). Anything purchasable commercially would be sewn out of cordura.

As per contemporary Russian carriers, this one takes balcs cut soft armor for the main body, has soft armor inserted front & neck guards (removed), soft armor groin protector & 4 scale able plates (2 front 2 rear).

You should not have a problem using them in most armor carriers. The soft armor inserts that you mention are not SPEAR/BALC cut, however they will likely work in most armor carriers (i.e. an Eagle CIRAS and Eagle LE Carrier or even the Condor MOPC/QPC). For an Eagle CIRAS there will be wiggle room depending on the cut of the armor panels and the size of the armor panels. Using such armor in a plate carrier (i.e. a banshee, Crye Precision JPC) will be a bit tight depending on the cut of the armor panels themselves.

What size are the armor inserts? Remember that a 42 is typically a large, 38/40 being medium, 44/46 being XL. Most standard armor carriers will accept the armor that you've mentioned as will many of the Plate Carriers.

Personally, I have an HSGI armor carrier that I have panels in from a Safariland vest without concern or problems.
