I'm glad you posted those pics up of your AR .22 Pistol. I was considering picking up the M&P 15-22 Pistol, but would love to mimic your build slightly

My CMMG upper on a Spikes lower I built.

10 shots...

It really needs a match trigger to tighten up that 50 yard group but I don't know what would work and still reliably fire. Right now, just have a standard LPK with a no-notch hammer.
So far, it has digested everything I feed it- this was a group with Winchester 'Wildcat' blasting ammo.

I finally got my Razorback upper to run smoothly after shipping it to the manufacturer. The owner just had to make a small adjustment because it was out of sync.

Pics are with a 200rnd and a 50rnd belt.

I'll try to put up a video after I spend some quality time with it out in the desert tomorrow.

That's a 9mm upper receiver. See how it's got the short ejection port cover and 9mm shell deflector?

Hence my question. Why the 9mm receiver?

All CMMG .22lr upper receivers come with that extended brass deflector. I know that 9mm uppers do as well. But mine's 100% a dedicated .22 lr upper.

Weird. I wonder why the decided on using the 9mm receiver for a .22lr.

No it is not a 9mm upper receiver. Standard Mil. upper receiver.
Because of the blast that comes out the side of an AR .22, and if you have spent much time with one you know, CMMG developed a deflector that fits on the side and splits the ejection port.
CMMG has also come out with a QD model for the guys using 5.56 and a conversion to switch back to a full sized ejection port door and no deflector.

9mm upper receivers are identical to standard mil spec upper receivers, yes you're right on that. However, the short door and big plastic brass deflector DO set them apart as a 9mm receiver. They are also missing the M4 feed ramps.

I've spent about 20-30 thousand rounds out of my TacSol dedicated AR-22. I've never noticed an appreciable amount of blast out of any dedicated .22 I've shot. I've put lots of trigger time on the TacSol, Model1Sales, Spikes dedicated, Spikes conversion, and CMMG conversion kit. Can't say I've experienced an uncomfortable amount of blast out the side.

The wife had an OOB once though. That was fun. Nice loud pop.

Well, they didn't develop anything. They just re-purposed the 9mm receiver design it looks like

A long time ago when I still had my bolt conversion I had issues when I shot left handed with hot gas in the face... Also, if your shooting right handed and using say, Remington GB's... You'll have a sad face moment.

Is it something that is always needed? Probably not.

Is it nice to have when you shoot off hand? Yup.

Is it nice when you shoot Remington GB's all day and you occasionally get some crap in your face? Yup.

Round counts... I'm not exactly near what you and Dave have down range in AR-15 style .22LR's (At least not yet , My goal is to put down range another 25k this summer through my first Dedicated Upper)... But, I easily have in excess of 15k rounds down my two dedicated uppers and probably another 1-2k down the bolt I had.

Like you said, It may not be something that everyone "needs"... But, it's a nice touch for some situations.

Edit: Yes, I run Remington GB's... Much to the dismay of the idiots at many local ranges who freak out when GB's wont run in their 10/22's but they will in my upper.

Since all my mags are the 27rd BDM's, I've found that it's REALLY EASY to put some serious lead downrange in my AR-22. I've got a loading tool that makes loading them easier too. Plus I load up all of them before I head out to save time at the range.

You're lucky. I had to trade some Remington ammo to another calgunner a while back because it wouldn't even CHAMBER in my AR-22. I normally really like Remington ammo, but that was annoying. My AR-22 runs great on the Winchester and Federal bulk stuff though.

Nice! I have to settle with 10rd mags... Which, i can load extremely quickly... But still... If I were rocking 27rd mags.. Oh man...

If I ever move out of state or the laws change here... You bet I'll be rocking similar mags

I must be very lucky since both of my CMMG Dedicated Uppers work with GB's.

Though... CMMG does NOT recommend people use them because of the issues that they and others have had. I'm glad because I've got a metric shyt ton of GB's (okay, maybe not... But I have a lot).

9mm receiver and deflector
http://jtdistributing.net/store/more_ar250.html

I don't see an original brass deflector on there. Just the big deflector. Maybe it's in under it.
The .22 deflector sets in front of the original brass deflector and with the QD version, can be removed and replaced with a standard door, still using the original deflector for the guys switching from .22 to 5.56.

I shot many thousands of rounds with .22 and no deflector also. CMMG is not my first to test for. Never payed a lot of attention to it with the exception that in a short time, my contacts were very uncomfortable, and the every so often sting on my face.
When I did get the upper with deflector, I didn't pay any attention until I had another rifle I was using a conversion in. In the face again.

So it's a mater of function and taste. Hence, the QD deflector and ejection cover.
Dave

I see it has that little detail... That you may never notice (unless you go back and forth)... But that is positive and removes that one little possible annoyance that can pop up for some users.

you guys have some super duper nice 22LR AR's...

I just cobbled together a really basic shooter from stuff I had laying around.

CMMG 22LR upper (thanks Dave!) with all the bells & whistles + 4 mags
Aero Precision lower
PSA Gen 2 LPK
JP yellow springs
Adjustable stock
Magpul MBUS

Total for everything including DROS, tax, shipping, etc. was about $715. Really looking forward to putting some lead through it tomorrow night.

Will gladly take suggestions and feedback. Planning to get an inexpensive optic sometime down the road.

My dedicated .22LR AR, just finished building it! Had most the parts sitting around minus the barrel and fake gas block.

Lower:
  • New Frontier Armory LW-15
Upper:
  • S&W Upper Receiver w/o FA and Dust Cover
  • CMMG .22 M4 Profile Barrel
  • CMMG Stainless Steel Bolt/Chamber Adaptor
  • CMMG Railed Non Functional Gas Block
  • NCStar 3-9x42 Scope

Had Monday off spent the day at the range with my .22s

Started off as a Chiappa upper half swapped the plastic upper receiver out.
new "improved" Bolt carrier group(is that what you'd call it in a .22?)
Cheap FF handguard
Umarex flipup irons
Optisan Mamba 1 x 4

New frontier complete lower

Fun as hell.
