Question "Starting mileage 142,546, 10-4"

Why are LEO's constantly reporting their mileage to dispatch?

I hear this on the scanner quite a bit...

We generally log starting and ending mileage when transporting female custodys.

Yes.

The Dispatcher will give a time over the air with your starting mileage and when you give your ending mileage when you arrive at your destination.

Precisely... the mileages and times go on the radio tape. Now, in this modern age, they go on CAD as well. Transporting females (or males for female officers) and all juveniles. It's been procedure since before I was dispatching in the late 1970's.

Even the fire department medics close to me give mileages / get times when they they transport anyone to the hospital.

Yes it is completely CYA, you would be surprised how many false complaints are filed against LEO's. This is why many of us are more sceptical of some of the stories that show up on the OT threads and wait for further investigation before coming to a conclusion.

FYI, I asked a related question a while back: What is an "X-Ray"?

The local LEOs tell their dispatch that they are transporting an "X-ray" in these situations. They say their mileage when starting out and arriving, and the dispatch responds with the time.

Sounds like an equal rights lawsuit in the making.

Yea, I'm playing devil's advocate here. I think it's a great way for a LEO to CYA. There have been many rapes and false aligations of rape over the years and this is one simple and effective way to prove what really happens. With the advent of digital recording devices capable of being mounted in transport vehicles, the need for this may be on the way out though.

I always turn my camera on and log miles when transporting females and have been anytime I transport any person to jail or juvenile hall.

I don't voice it over the air since it's easily updated via computer.

yup it is CYA.

Last week I was working alone when I saw a female walking alone at abpout 0300 hours. She was dressed in a very "club like" dress and was walking alone in a very very tough part of town. I saw she was crying and asked if she was OK. She told me she was drunk and fighting with her friends and decrided to walk home. She then asked for a ride. I said Yes and quickly turned on my voice recorder and advised disptch where I was going and with who.

I kept talking during the ride and had her repeat her story to ceatch it on tape. I also recorded when I was done dropping her off and enroute to my next call. You can nver be to careful now a days

We did the same thing in the 1980s and 1990s in patrol for the same reason. Some things never change.
