Default What Savage Bolt Rifle has the heavy spiral barrel?

I was a Burro and someone had a Bolt action RF with a heavy spiral cut barrel. I liked it it but he left after the next line break so I didnt get to ask. The guy next to him said it was a Savage.

My LGS has this Savage, Model Mark II BRJ on their shelf for a good price... except it's a .17 and I just can't see branching out in rimfire calibers.

It's MINE.... and it's a FANTASTICALLY accurate gun in .17HMR!

Got it from Bud's Gun Shop, 485$ + FFL xfer of 25$ = 510$ total. Shipping was free.

+1.

For what I wanna do with a rimfire cartridge I'll be sticking with the .22 LR.

This is where a CZ455 can come in handy if you are interested in shooting more then just 22lr. You can change the barrel to shoot either 22lr, 17hmr, or 22mag. No need to buy a whole new gun and optics.

I do see 17HMR at the local Walmart for $12 a box, pretty much what it was before the panic.

I finally got my Savage 93R17BRJ to the range for the first time yesterday. I had boresighted it at 50 yards in my back yard, so my first session was at 50 yards on the range. Really happy that my very first shot with the rifle was dead center in the bullseye. When I did my part 10 shot groups with Winchester 20gr XTP JHP (which I think I got recently for about $10 a box from Mid South) could be covered with a nickel. With the wind gusting directly across the range, things got interesting at 100 yards with random wind-blown flyers (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!) Interesting to me that the lighter 17gr Winchester Polymer Tip V-Max bullets seemed to group tighter at 100 yards than the 20 gr XTP. But I'm no experienced precision shooter so that might be normal, or maybe my rifle just likes those rounds better. Or maybe the wind had died down some.

Anyway, I am WAY impressed with my new Savage, and with the 17 HMR round. Fun and accurate gun with a nice trigger out of the box. And the Redfield 4-12 makes it a nice combo. Plus the fluted barrel, although not really functional on this gun, is a nice aesthetic.
