Default Any place to shoot steel in San Diego County?

Does anyone know of a place to shoot steel in San Diego County? Paper just isn't doing it for me.

Awesome, thanks.

How about outdoor ranges that have steel up all the time (for anyone to shoot)?

When did that policy change? They used to have "no Wolf" signs on the door like the 3 little pigs.

How is it ok for a Thursday and not another day? Their excuse about target damage goes away on Thursday?

There were some cowboy action guys shooting steel at South Bay on the 50m range on Sunday.
They were set up 3-7 yards from their targets, & were splattering the whole line with chunks of lead. Then, they acted like d-bags when asked to stop (by us, not the RO' s).

My point of this rant is that it appears SBRG will let you shoot steel if you bring your own targets.Lol

The cowboy action folks area always setting up their steel targets but that's just for them. I tried to set up a 6" steel plate at 300 yards and the RSO told me it was not allowed and I could only shoot the paper.

Iron Sights USED TO hold a steel match on Thursdays.
These were stopped last year because of the "splash".
It was tearing up the ceiling, the lights, etc.

What is stopping the OP from buying some steel plates and traveling to BLM land to shoot steel plates ??
Am I missing something ??

Nothing, except that my friend with the truck moved to Utah and taking my 20-year-old Honda over those trails might not be such a good idea...

The average ninja there does that without splash, they just miss. Exceptions are the suicidal jerks that leave pieces on the carpeted walls where you shoot.

Reviving this thread because I still want to shoot steel somewhere.

On the off chance SBR&GC was allowing steel, I went there this past Friday, but no joy. Paper only.

Are EF&G and Rainbow still doing steel on the 1st and 2nd Saturdays, respectively? Anywhere else?

Not looking for a BLM outing just yet, as I have been spending my G&A budget on G&A, not steel targets...

Actually there are matches almost every Saturday (the content is different though) go to their website and look ate the newsletter, one of the last pages is their calendar. Usually some good stuff in the classifieds too.

Personally I really like Escondido Fish and Game, they run safe and fun matches.

Steel is always set up at Pala...the days/hours they are open is a little weird.

And here is the list of the regular scheduled matches around socal.
Some are run n' gun with steel, some are not.

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=849404

All that being said....you should invest the money you would spend on entry fee's and buy some steel targets.

Then make friends with a truck owner, or get a few guys together and just rent a truck for a day, or create a clean up/shooting day and catch a ride with an attendee.

I have shot steel at SBR&G on the pistol range. The steel has to be able to swing, set up 40 inches or higher, and placed at 50 yards. As far as i know , those are the rules. It would be nice if we could shoot steel on the rifle range though.

So, I can bring my own steel? Which ranges No.2 and No.6, or just No.2? Is there someone I can talk to about this?

They guys who told me "no steel" all seemed to be volunteer range officers, and they didn't seem to know all the rules...

Haha I was wondering if sbr&g would. Hopefully people like this don't screw it up for us responsible ones.

RANGE 6: (50, 100, 200, & 300 YARD)
a.
Use only Paper Targets in wooden frames at club specified locations. (50, 100, 200,
& 300 yard)
b.
Silhouette targets at silhouette positions require that wooden frames be removed within 10 feet of
silhouette position. SBR&GC Steel Silhouette Targets are not for practice, simulated matches or casual
shooting. They are for sanctioned matches
only.
c.
No personal metallic targets are allowed on the range

This is copied directly from the SBRGC SOP's.
Save yourself a long drive as the answer is clear about steel targets.

Golfguy, RSO, SBRGC

Plates go bang but don't show how well you shot. Paper shows how well you shot but no sonic feedback.

Yes. I've shot plenty of paper, so I know how well I shoot.

Life, however, is about experiences, and now I'm ready for some bang.

Hand's down, Pala http://www.ncsapala.com/ is the best place in San Diego County to shoot steel, period. (and at a distance too, pics in the link) The desert is nice if your camping over night but if your just shooting for a day, it's almost not worth the effort. (considering the travel time and set up/tear down)

I'll give my quick opinions of Pala to help you decide:

Pro's

ton's of soft and hard steel from 100 to 890 yards
shooting up hill on dirt, so you can see your misses
you can set your own paper up, anywhere after 50 feet
tiny 22 targets at less than 50 feet
separate pistol range with resettable arrays from the bench

Con's

only open Monday and Friday to the public
an hour drive from San Diego and a little high in price
very strict rules enforced, a good thing though (a bunch of old salty dogs run it)

I may go Monday Feb 8th if you want to meet up for a day of shooting. They are open from 8:00am to 2:00pm so I plan for a whole day if I'm heading up there. Try it out either way.

Have a good one

Matt

Pala is the place for steel, exception is steel ammo, no good except for paper there. The problem is once you shoot at the long range steel you don't hear it from that far away with all the noise on the firing line.

They do provide spray cans of florescent paint for them, you can see the lead splats through a good spotting scope. Then you realize you want targets on them so you can see how well you did. Then you go back to paper again. It's a cycle.

Painting the plates works great, you can always take a picture if you want a record of it. Our group uses both but the plates see the most attention.
