Revolver: S&W:Ruger:Colt
Ok. I'm looking at getting a 357 and was considering these three:
S&W Model 27-9 (blue) 6 1/2 Ruger GP100 (GP161 - blue 6 1/2) Colt Trooper MKIII Any thoughts, opinions? |

I have a S&W 27-2 6"
Ruger KGP-161 6", GP-161 6" Trooper Mark III 8" The Trooper supposedly has the same internal parts as the Python. Rougher finish but just as accurate. Best trigger of the three. This is an older Smith than your model, so the trigger might be a little smoother. Accuracy is equal to the Trooper. Trigger breaks like glass. The Rugers are the newest. I've changed out the spring kits on both, but they still feel heavy compared to the Trooper and Smith. So, if you can't get a Python, get the Trooper. It's still a Colt! Older model Smiths are much sought after for their triggers and finish. Your newer model will still have a better trigger pull than the Ruger. Rugers, while accurate, you can buy anytime. |

If you're gonna shoot it go with GP100.

It has been noted that the Trooper Mark III was likely the strongest of the medium framed .357 Magnums, it isn't as strong as the N-frame M-27. I've handled a few of the later N-framed S&Ws and their MIM action parts do result in pretty good trigger pulls right out of the box As a point of reference, I own a M27-2, a couple of Pythons from the 70s and an early GP-100 and have put a lot of rounds through each of them

I have a GP100. It's an older one, and I knew buying it I would get a trigger job. Plan on that. It's a sweet shooter now. They are also built like a tank. Good luck finding any thing in California. Most of the gun shops around here are bare!

Enlighten me as too why you can't shoot Model 27's or Troopers please? Mine are curious.
Ruger loses me at hello.

If your going with S&W - take the effort to find a nice pre-lock. They hold their value better. I'd love to find a nice 27-2.
As mentioned I'd stick with the older Colt Troopers. I've shot Trooper III's and I'm not a big fan of the DA trigger. Smiths are much smoother. I have no experience with the older Troopers but if they are anything like Pythons - they do have the best DA trigger of any revolver I've ever touched. GP100's are solid guns with a decent DA trigger. It was my first revolver I ever owned. I loved it but unfortunately I traded/sold it for something else I had to have at the time. For the money - It's my pick for "best buy" for the money. |

I have Colts/S&W's, and Rugers. My favorite revolvers for everyday carry and shooting and beating up, I'd say I like my Rugers the absolute most. They are my favorite "working man's" firearms; rifles included.

I collect Colts, and I dont shoot what I collect. My Pythons, Anaconda, Diamondbacks and Trooper all have the sweetest triggers, smooth actions, excellent balance in addition to good looks. My Rugers are built like tanks and theres plenty of them around so I don't lose sleep over scratches and dings. I am not familiar with model 27 but own a 686 and absolutely love it. I also dont shoot my bull bbl 3 inch 64 SW for the same reasons stated above. Now Ill need to find a therapist and discuss my addiction before telling you about my 1911s. Hope this helps.

If you actually find a 6 1/2" bbl. GP-100 let us know. Heck, let RUGER know; I'm sure they would be interested to know how low their QC has fallen.....
Kidding aside, if you're going to do a lot of shooting with full-house .357 loads and experiment with heavy bullets for big game and such, a GP-100 will serve you well. And kick you very little. But get a good gunbelt or that sucker will pull your pants off! If it's a tank, it's a not a light tank! |

My son has a 4" Trooper Mk III and I have a 4" GP100. Both have trigger jobs.
For the history value, I love the Colt. For shooting, I love the GP100. The GP100 will shoot hot reloads all day long, I would not say the same for the Colt. Good luck.

If you are buying these for an investment, Colt or S&W.
If you are buying to shoot the heck out of, Ruger.

Ruger GP100 and SW 27 or 28 4" are good balance revolver to have.
Colt lock work are very finniky. The SW 27-2 with a 5" is my choice. Good luck and any of the revolver are good to go. |

Wish I could find one of those.... I believe they are still making the Dirty Harry style shoulder holster. A serious aficianado will know the model number without Google.

I got my very first revolver yesterday and went to shoot it. Its an older S&W 686 with a 4" barrel. Shooting it makes me feel soooooo
357 ain't cheap but they're fun as hell! That blow back pressure on my face just just makes me feel like I'm shooting a canon. And talk about a hair trigger! I thought my TRP's trigger is good, but this is just another level! I know this isn't helping the OP's question, but I just cannot contain myself

Ooh some awesome revolver porn in this thread; very nice.
I like the 4" 686 of TanMan, my favorite barrel length on those. And highpower's model 29's... beautiful. I especially like the no dash with the cokebottle grips, those are my favorite revolver grips. BVAC makes a great warm 44 special equivalent load, the BV44M-4N. 240gr JHP at 1000 fps, great fun to shoot out of Model 29's and what I consider the "Dirty Harry" load since he said he used a "light, special load" in Magnum Force
