Default Check handgun registration?

Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this in but:

My coworker wants to sell me a Dan Wesson .357 revolver unfired that he has had in his possession sleeping in the attic for around 7 years that he inherited from his father-in-law. He does not know the history of the gun, and wanted to know if it was even registered to his father-in-law in the first place before he attempts to do the registrations forms so he can sell it.

Is there a DOJ form or any way to find out the registration status of his handgun to see if everything is on good to go?

Again, sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I figured some higher-up LEO would know the answer to this one.

No, there are no ordinary ways for non-LEO to do that; one can get a list of what is in the AFS by person, but not info by gun.

OTOH, your co-worker does not need to register the handgun to himself before selling it. See the wiki article on registration -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Firearms_registration

So he can PPT it through an FFL without it having to be registered to him? And I assume the DROS process will then register the handgun in the buyers name?

Thanks for the link as well, Librarian! I was never aware that selling PPT does not clear your name from ownership of a firearm.

From above linked wiki: Note that when you sell a handgun via Private Party Transfer at a California FFL, the handgun is not automatically removed from your AFS record of registered firearms. One can use the form above to remove a handgun sold from one's AFS record.

Correct on both accounts.
