Default Ruger 10/22 TakeDown w/ Bull barrel & Hogue Overmold stock

all work done by forum member: couch

Ruger 10/22 Takedown with a twist

As soon as I picked up and shouldered the Takedown I was determined to fit a new stock to it. I had contacted Hogue, but they had responded with no plans at the moment. Another member on here stated to check back before the next show and would seem there has been demand for such an item.

The bull barrel was couch's idea once he had seen my newly acquired Takedown. I went ahead and picked up both the barrel and the stock and couch did up all the fitting on his manual lathe and mill. More info regarding fitting those items can be seen in this thread; http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...70#post9628170
Feel free to contact him regarding any questions with the fitment and process.

I was torn between scopes, but decided on the Nikon as I am a big fan of their glass. All the photos were taken on a Nikon D7000 with Alienbee flashes triggered by Pocketwizards.
The Burris rings and all the KIDD components came highly regarded so I ordered them and couldn't be more content. As it is pictured the TD barely squeezes into the included carrying bag.

I do have the original stock and barrel in their original state. I intend to pickup the barrel block and internal components from Ruger so I can swap the barrels without exchanging parts.

Going camping in a couple weeks and will update with how it performs. Looking forward to it seeing this is my first 10/22 build. Overall I am very pleased with the outcome. Enjoy.

Green Mountain Barrel .920" Diameter 1 in 16" Twist 20" Stainless Steel (made to fit)
Hogue 10/22 Overmolded Stock Nylon, .920 Barrel, Black (made to fit)
Nikon P-22 2-7x32 Rimfire Riflescope BDC 150
Burris 1" Signature Zee Weaver-Style Rings Matte High
KIDD "Trigger Job" Kit
KIDD Cocking Assembly
KIDD CNC Bolt
KIDD Bolt Buffer
KIDD Bolt Hold Open

That's how the Takedown should have come from the factory.

That is awesome. Maybe Ruger will copy what you've done, with a Talo edition or something.

With a heavy bull barrel to make it weigh more than it has to, countering the whole handy compact gun concept? Granted it would have made sense for them to have it as a factory option or 2nd model available.

That being said, the number of missed opportunities for improvements and options that customers actually want on a factory 10/22 is astounding, so Ruger failing to provide it is par for the course.

Damn good looking custom job though.

This work is very interesting, as well as (obviously) well done.

I hope this isn't out of line (given I live in PA) but I saw this build and it applies to something similar that I'm just beginning. So I'd like to follow through with a few questions if this thread is still alive.

I'm having a suppressed barrel made for my 10 22 multicam takedown. I've looked into ordering a seperate multicam front from the Ruger AZ plant which would be later outfitted with the same stainless bull barrel used in this build. Ruger is saying they do not offer additional front stocks and barrels for the takedown at this time. They are only offered through whole gun sales/production.

1. Is the Green Mountain barrel the only resource for the barrel? Is there anyone else scheduled to or already in the process of making the takedown barrel as designed as an exact replacement piece for the takedown model (besides Ruger)?

2. Forgetting about the camo finish, would it be possible to marry an aftermarket stock such as the Hogue to the factory receiver end?...(assuming I can find the connecting hardware).

For this build I took a standard Hogue Overmold stock, and a standard Stainless BullBarrel by Green Mountain and modified both of them to work with this setup. Neither of them were TakeDown specific before I modified them. So if I'm reading your questions correctly, you can use most barrels for this modification and most stocks as well given there is enough meat in them to modify.

Thanks!

The only missing part(s) then would be the connecting hardware within the front stock of the takedown. From talking with them Ruger is not likely to offer takedown specific parts (like barrel to receiver hardware) anytime soon. I'm looking at various sites for takedown scraps from custom builds but haven't found anything yet. Short of buying an entire takedown or custom milling the connector hardware (leery of accuracy compromise) I'm not seeing the answer. Might be more trouble than it's worth and best to just buy another 10 22 with bull barrel. But... that defeats the idea of having 2 barrels for the same gun in the same backpack. ideas?

matched with a light Tacsol barrel, Nodak rear sight/rail/front sight
would be a cool combo

Does a Kidd or PWS tensioned barrel have enough "beef" on it to work?

Nice rifle. How much more on top of the 10/22 did you spend?

I'd like to know this as well. Perhaps the carbon barrels would need some sort of sleeve or collar. Has anyone tried this? Anyone willing to try?

Ooooh! I want one too! I already have the takedown. The Ruger hardware could probably be duplicated by a good machinist. Might piss Ruger off just a bit.... (patents, copyrights and such)

You were right about Ruger getting pissed off, I showed them my picture and as luck would have it, the company attorney was standing next to me and paid Hogue a little visit. I just wanted to ask if they were making this or if this was a prototype. Since he didn't look too happy about that, I'm guessing it wasn't.
