Default How to dros a pistol already in possession?

I have someone asking how to go about transferring a pistol to them which was acquired numerous years ago without a proper dros/transfer. The previous owner is no where to be found and the current owner just wants to make things legal/right with the laws. Any help appreciated!

Not an FFL, nor have I ever played one on a TV soap opera.

Sounds like time for a VOLREG.

What does "numerous years ago" turn out to mean?

If it was before 1991, no paper was required for a transfer; it's entirely legal to own and use guns not known to the state, so in that case nothing needs to be done.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Try a volreg, but if off roster might be a problem.

You meant prior to 1991?

OK.

Why - for what specific purpose - does the current owner want his ownership recorded?

For example, if he were to get CCW, and want to carry that gun, a lot of issuing agencies want the gun explicitly registered to the CCW holder. In that case, the suggested VOLREG works.

Transfer 'without benefit of FFL' is a misdemeanor (PC 26500); most misdemeanors have a statute of limitations of 3 years, and this one has not been designated as a 'continuing offense'; if 'numerous years ago' is greater than 3, that crime is very likely to be unprosecutable.

I appreciate all your help! It looks like he just wants everything to be legal. We’ll go with the Volreg as it seems most appropriate.
