i know its not cheaper but its ton more fun shooting my s&w m&p15-22
try finding a used marlin, savage and or Mossberg for your price point. good luck - sometimes those cheaper guns jam up and have failures (get what you paid for philosophy) my 15-22 eats it all up and keeps running. I haven't shot my 10/22 for at least 5 years

I don't know where you are located but Turner's has the Marlin model 60 on sale on a regular basis. Also consider the Glenfield model 60, which is an older Marlin 60 made as an "off brand" rifle for some stores.

I have a Marlin Model 75. It is basically a Model 60 with a 16" barrel. Great little gun.
I also have 10/22's and 15/22's. All great rifles. You can't go wrong with any of them.

I really like my 15-22.
Easy to clean and shoots most .22lr. I recently did a full disassy/cleaning of my Marlin 989M2, an older version of the 795 I think. What a total PITA, but it did take many thousands of rounds before needing to be opened up. Maybe the 795 is easier?

I have seen the Marlin 795 on sale for about $159-169 bucks or so and its worth every penny. Accurate as all hell too. You wont be sorry you bought either Marlin rifle. Don't buy a Rem. 597. Its even worse then a Ruger 10/22, a real jam-O-matic. The Remington Speed-master 522 is a great .22 LR and will even fire most .22 shorts too, but its not cheap as its pure-D American Walnut stock. |

Or look for an old gun. I got an old jc higgens tube fed for a hundred bucks, and it outshoots my ruger any day of the week. Plus it holds like 18 rounds. My next 22 would be a ruger american. Bolt action, takes 10/22 mags! Im not current on pricing though.

Hard to believe that so many people love the 10/22 with a rifle like the Marlin model 795 on the shelves. I had to finally break down and put a Kidd 10/22 bolt kit in my Ruger before it was a reliable rifle. But I will never own or buy any Ruger firearm ever again. Remington really screwed the pooch with the 597 .22 cal. rifle. I couldn't get that rifle to shoot a full ten round mag without an FTF/jam-up, even using the best .22LR ammo, even after a thorough cleaning/oiling. Pretty bad. It was indeed accurate when it did fire, but that's all I can say for it, so I got rid of it. OTOH, my 795 will fire anything I put through it, even cheap ammo. I know my .22 rifles, as I wore out the aluminum receiver on my old Winchester model 290. Its was a fine gun and would even fire shorts although it would occasionally have a jam using shorts. It still works, but its a keepsake now that its so old and had so many rounds down it. |

Same here, it's a great .22 rifle. Slap a Bushnell TRS-25 on it and you've got yourself a great plinker.

The Marlin Model 60 is a tack driver out of the box.
Some people don't like the tube fed magazine, and you need to be sure to keep your grip on it when you're replacing it after loading rounds (or you'll lose it past the firing line and have to wait until the next cease fire)but you can get something like a Spee-D-Loader and have fairly rapid reloads, considering. |

I have a 10/22 that's down to the original receiver and bolt - everything else is aftermarket. Superb shooter - the wife sits at the kitchen table and picks off ground squirrels out the window with it. I bought a 40 year old Marlin 60 for $125, and it outshoots the 10/22.

One more vote for the Marlin 795 / 60 models. They will meet all of your requirements.
One of the reasons I went for the Marlin over the Ruger is because the Marlin does not have as much aftermarket support, and I really wanted to avoid the temptation of customizing and upgrading. The other reason was the great reviews I read about its accuracy right out of the box. This is in no way bashing the Ruger, as it is an iconic rifle that I wouldn't mind owning some day. I have seen the 795 as low as $109 during the Holidays. The 60 maybe $20 more. I matched my 795 up with a BSA Sweet .22 6-18x40 scope and a one-piece scope mount, all for under $275. It has been a great bench-shooting set up so far. The weight-specific turrets that come with the BSA scope combined with the Federal Auto Match .40 gr ammo has the rifle hitting on point out to 75 yards (about as far as I have shot so far for accuracy). My setup is a favorite amongst new shooters as well as those who don't want to shoot high recoil stuff. The accuracy certainly helps build confidence.

My 3 favorite .22s are my Browning BL-22, my Browning SA-22, and my CZ 455 Varmint, in that order.
If you want to pay more, consider one of these: http://www.coolguyguns.com/RIFLES_c_10.html

Agree on the Marlin 60. Mine was bought in 1981 and still runs great. Henry is a fun choice for a lever on the more affordable side. If you find a decent used fieldmaster or speedmaster those are also fun guns. Used bolt action makes your $50 per 500 ammo last a long time. So does a single six but that would most likely be above $280.

You are not joking about that.
Its not as accurate out of the box as lots of rifles; has feed/jam issues and its overpriced for a non-Walnut (not walnut colored birch) Stocked rifle. About the only thing the 10/22 can do better then most .22 LR rifles semi-auto rifles is to feed ammo into the chamber manually, since the magazine is so wide to accommodate the rotary magazine. |

I also enjoy the old Winchester pump action 22's. I have a 62A from the 40's. Unfortunately all of which will probably cost you more than your $280 price point unless you get extremely lucky on a used one from someone who doesn't know better.

Of course you could always pick something that shoots obsolete caseless 22 ammo...

I have a Savage 64 that is a decent little rifle and pretty accurate.
I had actually gone to Big 5 with the intention of buying a Marlin 795, but they were out of stock. They had the 64 that was supposed to be a package deal with a scope, but for some reason the scope was missing. They offered it at $30 off the sale price, so I bought it. It is a bit finicky on ammo. It runs well on Federal blue box bulk, but definitely doesn't like Remington Goldens or Federal Automatch.
