Default We Lost One Of The Best!!!

Thanks to a PM from Switchbarrel I found out my longtime friend and shooting mentor affectionately nicknamed "Dangerous Bob Dorton" had passed away.
He was a board member at Sacramento Valley for years and it was with tireless effort that he helped maintain and keep the various ranges in good order.
Bob was easy to spot in his bib overalls always working on a range project.
He was left-handed but shot left bolts right bolts and any ejection option available he just liked guns.
A visit to Bob's place would have him opening many safes and showing you over 50 different benchrest rifles before you left. Bob shot everything from air rifles to 22's to pistols and if course 100,200,300,600 and 1000 yard benchrest rifles. He couldn't find a Allen wrench one time so we drove down to a local supply house where Bib purchased a box of the correct size wrenches. He opened the box and sprinkled the wrenches all around his shop so he could always find one.
Bob gave his bank teller a 67 Corvette for her birthday one year because she liked cars.
Bob never did the internet but if he did he would be one of the best posters to listen to. He shot 4-5 days a week and easily owned over a hundred guns in just about every cartridge.
A truly nice guy who will be missed by all that knew him.
We are diminished.

I never met Dangerous Bob personally but it sounds like we are all suffering a loss from losing him.

May he rest in peace.

Wow. I know a few just like him. Lots of knowledge.
Hopefully his family (if he had any) was on track with proper estate planning, and his treasure finds good homes.

Bob was one of the friendliest, most helpful guys I knew. Fun to talk to, always telling stories. Anyone who shoots at Sac Valley owes him a debt of gratitude, seems like he was always working on something there. I will miss seeing him at the matches.

RIP Bob, condolences to his family and friends, and his "family" at Sac Valley. I never met him myself, but he sounds like an amazing guy, and I sure would have liked to. He will be missed.
Thank you for sharing OP

I shot with Bob many times. He had some good jokes from left field.

Damm, R.I.P. my friend. I've known Bob over 30 years. He was instrumental in installing the electronic target carriers in the James Mangan Range.

Easily owned over a hundred guns? That's an understatement. I don't know how many and I'd bet Bob didn't either.

Default We Lost One Of The Best!!!

Bob was super cool to me.. I very much appreciated his help and nonjudgmental way..

I was amazed when I walked over to his Vehicle behind the pits... there He had a crate that looked like it was out of the Raiders of the lost Ark... opening it up it was full of barrels!

Well turns out it was a group buy, but still amazing.

RIP Bob

Default Bob

They had a nice Memorial service / Celebration of Life / BBQ on
Range 11 today. Heard a lot of the same characterizations: friendly, helpful,
sharing, caring, giving, etc. A great guy who will be missed by many.

Here is Bob and myself at the 2009 NBRSA 600 Yard Nationals. Notice the Team Calfee shirt for those using tuners or shooting rimfire benchrest. I put a small paper bag over the tuner at weigh in and caused a lot of controversy.
Bob shot a 49-1X with a used gun and somebody else's reloads.
He shot a 0.853 five shot group the next year with another used gun and somebody else's reloads maybe Dick Collier? It was common for Bob to buy any bodies used gear and outshoot them with there own ammo as well.
