Default 400$ to spend

Looking to get a shotgun at the 400$ mark, the three I'm looking at are the maverick 88, mossberg m500 or remington 870 express tactical. Looking for opinions on all three as home security and general plinker.

I'd go back about 3 to 4 pages on this forum and read forward...the question gets asked more than a little bit.

The answer boils down to "flip a coin". You might also find some folks who own some you can try.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those... Give each one a feel to see which you like better. And there's about a 99% chance that you know people who already own a 500 and an 870, so it shouldn't be hard to find those to try shooting. I don't own an 870, but it would be my personal choice if I was looking for a budget shotgun.

Based on your budget, I think 9 out of 10 experienced shooters would recommend the Remington 870, not the tactical, but the regular 870 model. The tactical is too limiting while the regular 870 gives you options at the range, field and home. The Maverick is just plastic "junk" and the Mossberg, in my opinion, isn't close to the 870. The other option would be to look at the used market.

If I had that amount, I might have gone with a Weatherby PA-459 instead of the Maverick 8 shot I just bought. They are rather new, but getting great reviews and have some nice features the others don't. Turners has them on close out for $350.

If your goal is "home security and general plinker" I think the best deal is the Mossberg 500 12-Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun Combo they offer at Bass Pro, Big5 and other places for around $350.

Great shotgun. Includes 18.5" and 28" vent-rib barrels.

One shot deal and you are covered for all your shotgun needs.

I own a Rem 870 and Mossy 500. I love them both. I would trust my life on both. And the minute Remington 870 package that comes with a $350 includes 18.5" and 28" vent-rib barrels I will recommend those too.

Spend $600 and get a Beretta A300 instead. Much better gun.

Id do the moss 500 combo $309$ big 5 ad this week.
Or at bass pro has the moss 500 with wood combo

Id do the combo for clays an home defense.

I like the rem 870 also but the wingmaster had so much love the other 870s seem second best.
kinda like the mossberg maverick 88. Anyway. Good luck and keep us posted.

THANKS FOR THE New Thread
if all we had were old posts this forum would suck. Thanks.

Maybe buy a bunch of shells and shoot it?

I see that you've already bought some birdshots, also try out some different brands of buckshots and check their patterning. Some people prefer a very tight pattern while some prefer a bit of a spread, so you'll want to find out which ones work best for you.

As you might know already, shotgun ammo tears up paper targets very quickly. What I do, is to go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a roll of those brown contractor paper and cut them into sizes I need for my targets. Heck a lot cheaper, and more sturdy, than the typical paper targets you can buy.

Do you also own a AR-15 rifle? If you do, don't throw away all the boxes that holds 25 rounds of birdshots. You can use them to hold 5.56mm/.223rem ammo loaded on stripper clips, useful for quick reloads of magazines at the range, especially if you have a StripLULA. Each box can hold 13 clips, or 130 rounds. Like this:

Jay, that's a 500 not 590. Add 65$ for my local FFL to transfer and also collect taxes on it. So it ends up being closer to 400. 335 for the 590 I bought transfered is a steal imho
