Default Browning Buck Mark Contour or Camper?

Rimfire gang,

Early February of 2019, I had to sell off my Blue Buck Mark Slab Sided Standard URX pistol. I had been without a 22 LR pistol ever since.

Lately however, I am getting the itch for another 22LR firearm. I couldn't decide whether to sink my money into the Camper or the Contour. My main use will be for range fun. This time, I am hoping I will be able to hang onto the pistol for quite sometime. I would like to be able to upgrade a few things but not make the piece a money pit where you would literally splurge the same amount as the cost or more of the initial purchase price of the pistol.

If you are in the market between these two models, which would you likely buy and why??

Thanks.

Camper.
- The only difference between Contour and the rest is the build-in Weaver rail on the Contour for easy to mount the red dot.
- You can buy the Picatinny rail to mount the red dot https://www.amazon.com/Tactical-Solu...s%2C232&sr=8-1

(Own Countour and Lite, I mounted the Tac. Sol rail on my Lite).

Thank you "newbie1234", the Camper it is then. It is also cheaper and whenever I look for an aftermarket grips, there are more available for the Camper with the UFX grip frame than the URX for the Contour.

There are also differences in the grips. I’ve got the UDX which has beautiful wood grips but honestly the URX grips on the Contour fit me better. I was not a fan of the camper grips.

Any advice on the best place to buy extra genuine Browning Buckmark magazines?
Grabagun has 'em for $23.49 + shipping
Midway 26.49 free-ship > $50

Any other, better option?

Try CDNN. Usually their prices are some of the best, if they have it.

I second that. Campers did not sit well in my hand because the grip frame circumference is larger. The URX had the best fit for me and the UDX a close second. With either of these two, aftermarket grips are not needed, The bigger difference would be to get the longer barrel. Any model that has the 7 1/4" barrel will be easier to aim and shoot than the 5 1/2" barrel.

A red dot is the way to go but I wouldn't use the weaver or picatinny rail. The Outer Impact mount gives the red dot the cleanest and lowest mount to the bore and also eliminates the Picatinny base on the red dot saving a lot of excess weight. I personally favor the Burris FF3 red dot but the mount is compatible with Vortex, Nikon and several more red dots.

Browsing through the Browning website, the California Roster approved Buck Marks are so limited.

The Buck Mark Lite Gray URX with the 7 1/4 inch barrel looks interesting. Just don't know if someone here in Calguns owns one to give a feedback.

I had one, gray, 7 1/4 " barrel. I used to shoot this pistol AFTER I shoot 300-400 rds on SW-41 (7" barrel) or BM Contour, or when I wear-out after two hours at the range (I am a small dude with old age). This BM Lite is very LIGHT compare to SW-41 or Contour.

After I install the Red Dot on the Tac. Sol. Picatinny rail, this BM Lite out shoot SW-41 with iron sight and Contour with Red Dot. Couple hundred rounds inside 2" target labels at 50" (the longest distance on the indoor range) free hands standing is no problem at all.
with Vortex Red dot

Old pictures.

Camper is pretty much the only Buckmark I don’t like, prefer the UDX grips and slide. I’d get the contour over the camper.

Contour.

I like the grips, eats everything, accurate. I wanted the long barrel (7.25), but it wasn’t kommiefornia approved and is now no longer in production. So I got the next longest one.

My only complaint is the stupid kommiefornia mag disconnect. But I think that’s on both guns.

Good luck!

A follow up to this thread.....I just ordered from Buds the basic Buck Mark Camper and one extra Browning magazine. It should arrive at my FFL within 3-5 business days from today.

I ordered the cheapest blued one. I am going to make this as the foundation for a build in the future, hence the reason for going with the cheapest model.

Thank you all for your feedback and contribution.

Nice. Have you done any upgrading? I know most Browning Buck Mark are good guns. But what I am asking really is.....changing/upgrading just for the heck of it.

Thanks for that, " newbie1234 "^^^^^^^^. Lots of money sank into that thing. Its a good template. The black color of the pistol is aesthetically pleasing.

I know I want a TandemCross Victory Trigger, perhaps a different upgraded grips for starter.

I have been wanting a Buckmark for a while. My daughter and I shoot 22s regularly and I wanted a Buckmark to add to the lineup.

This thread prompted me to pull the trigger on a UDX from Buds. Guess I have to buy some more magazines.

The Burris FF3 on Outer Impact mount is the lightest and lowest to the bore red dot setup for the UDX.

I will do the paperwork for my Camper on Thursday.

Browsing through the internet, I saw a grip adapter for the Browning Buckmark, made by an outfit called Striplin Custom.

Striplin Custom sells an adapter metal plate so one can use 1911 grips on their Browning Buckmark and Ruger Mark Series. Just wondering if there are any Buckmark owner on the forum who have any experience with this. If there are, kindly post your feedback.

Thanks.

Hi Brad H, just arrived from my LGS and I just did the paperwork. Pick up is after 7/11. But I was told to call before coming in to be sure that DOJ processed things on time. I was told, there are lots of delayed cases. Just an FYI.

Yea, I got the same thing. My FFL told me that he is seeing 11 days typically, but he has seen as much as 16. I guess it is a race to see who get their gun first.

Picked mine up Tuesday late, then left town Wed morning, so haven’t shot it. No serious complaints on handling it, but - dang - the safety is super stiff. Is that expected to lighten-up during “run-in”, or is there some regular, recommended tweaking that I should do if I’ve already got it open to check out the mag disconnect?

Forgot to mention the spare magazines. I ordered from Buds a Browning brand spare magazine, but I was told they are out of stock. So I guess for the time being, I"ll have to make do with one.

I am already thinking of tinkering....buying the Striplin grip adapter so I can use 1911 grips on the Buck Mark.

I ordered 3, I am a little OCD and like to have 4 Magazines for all my 22 Pistols. I ordered mine from Midway, but it looks like CDNN is a better deal.

I just put in an order for 2 from CDNN. I will have a total of 3. That's enough for me......for now.

Now, on to hunting for a suitable aftermarket grips.

Gun.deals.com or wiki-arms.com can do a search for you of the lowest cost on any gun you are looking for. They even have a CA LEGAL tab. When I was looking for my first buck mark I almost got the contour because I wanted the back up irons to go along with any pistol red dot. Also the grips are going to be different. If you like the grip of the contour but like the price of the camper, check out the practical. I ended up choosing the Target Lite 5.5” with the fluted barrel. It weighs in at 28oz which I think is only 6 ounces lighter than a camper. Typically when I shoot my Buckmark, I put 500 rounds through it, and never get fatigue. It also comes with a target rear sight with a fiber optic front. Another feature I wanted. If cost is the driving force behind the purchase, write down what features you do want, then see what modifying the cheapest pistol would cost. You may not care about the grips of the contour, or irons, so putting a rail on the camper might be a way to go. Also, they do sell rails with irons too. Good luck and have fun!

What do you prefer as aftermarket grips for your Camper, the G10 grips or the aluminum colored grips from Tandemkross?

I like to purchase one of those nice blue colored Tandemkross aluminum grips, but they are out of production. Tried eBay, no luck.

The G10s are available from Hogues but only in green and black color. Few years back there were several colors of choice that were available now its just black and green.

My 2 spare Browning Buck Mark magazines came in yesterday from CDNN. Very high quality Browning products indeed!

I should be able to pick up my Buck Mark Camper from my LGS on the 11th after the 10 day wait. We shall see, fingers crossed.

5 or multiple of 5 is the magic number. Then you don't have to keep a partial box of 50 rounds. I have 5 for the Buckmark and 10 for the 10/22. Somehow ended up with 14 for the 41.
