Default Favorite C & R semi-auto rifle

When I first started collecting Milsurp firearms a few years ago, I was drawn mainly to foreign bolt-action rifles. Somewhere along the line I started picking up semi-auto rifles whenever the price was right (very rare these days). Now I am sitting on 2 gun safes full of milsurp guns, many of which are semi-auto. I am sure many of you enjoy shooting your classic semi-auto rifles and have a hard time picking a favorite, but I'm going to ask anyway--what is your favorite one to shoot (and in what caliber)? I'm talking about accuracy, ergonomics, reliability, fun factor, i.e. the whole package.

For me it would have to be my Venezuelan FN-49 in 7mm Mauser. After the gas is readjusted, she is a pleasure to shoot. She can easily be a beauty queen, too.

Favorite semi auto overall: ag-42b Ljungman in 6.5x55 swede

Favorite to shoot: svt-40 in 54r.

Sent from my Galaxy S10 5G using Tapatalk

Edit: oops I've been talking about Swiss 7.5 lately autocorrected to 7.5 instead of 6.5

FN 49 IN 7mm is outstanding. I too love the 30-06. It beats out the Garand IMO.

Ljungman is great too. Brass flys!

I have a powerful desire to own a FN-49 in 30-06. At present my only milsurp semi-auto is the Garand I bought from DCM 40 years ago. With it I can hit anything I can see.

I’ll be the weird one and say MAS 49 (not /56) in 7.5 French with the APX L806 scope.

Iron sights M1 Garand.

SVT40 and G43 get honorable mention for being fun to shoot but not the first one I’d grab.

M-1 Garand, it’s the only one I have. And, yes the ping brings a very wide smile to my face.

Other than the Veny FN49, I also have a ljungman, a Garand, M1 Carbine, a Hakim, a Rasheed, and SKS. They go to the ranch on a rotational basis, but the FN and Ljungman definitely go more than the others. I bought an M1A years ago, thinking that it would be my go-to shooter. Instead it has become a $1,400 safe queen.

M1 carbine followed by the M1 Garand. The iron sights are just about perfect.

I will admit though, I'm waiting around and setting aside some spending money hoping to eventually get my hands on a MAS-49/56 and Venezuelan FN-49.

Managed to shoot a buddies 49/56 and FN-49 in .308 and 8mm respectively, and frankly the tough parts finding one in 7.5 French and 7mm Mauser. Hopefully the former won't be a problem in a month or so, since I'm just hoping Classic doesn't run out of 49/56's before I manage to get enough disposable income set aside to order one, overpriced or not.

Chi Com & Eastern Bloc SKS rifles

I never got into French rifles because the ammo has always been scarce

7.62x39 Russian has been available in large quantities for decades

I've been looking for one in 30-06. If the FN came out a few years earlier, it would've given the Garand the run for its money!

M1 Carbine. I used to think the Garand was the shyt until I picked up a carbine. What a great little rifle. Virtually zero recoil and the ammo isn't anywhere as expensive as the 30-06.

I came across a MAS 49/56 with a disabled grenade launcher for $650 a couple years ago at the Big Reno Show. I had to walk away from it because I wanted a Madsen M47 at the next table. Talk about the biggest regret!

Definitely the Ljungman followed closely by the MAS 49/56.

I won a match with my Ljungman despite thenterribe sights. Had a hard time policing up that brass though.....it was thrown 30 or 40 feet away

You have both too?
I like the Winchester, because it's less common. I actually ran across it while looking for an 8/81.

Favorite military semi-auto C&R rifle...AG 42B Ljungman. My sons and I shoot them in a vintage semi-auto military rifle silhouette match and do pretty well against the Garands.

Favorite civilian semi-auto C&R rifle...toss up between the Winchester '07 SL .351 and the Remington model 81

Overall favorite...Remington model 81 previously owned by the FBI

I think my all time favorite would have to be the M1 Garand. Second would be my SVT40.

Sold my Hakim several years back when I needed money. I'll never forgive myself for selling it instead of giving blood or finding other unsavory means of getting money. That thing shot like a champ.

mle 49/56 with the APX scope. I was very fortunate to get this and a mle 49 with numbered parts matching. However I don't believe these are the original parts; they were probably overhauled innumerable times.

Guns I don't have? The Pedersen. I saw two at the San Mateo show sometime in 1992-1994. They were the same ones from a Gun List ad. A few years earlier I could have bought one but by that time I was married and she insisted on putting every last spare dime into real estate. I also worried that they might be "hot". The park ranger at Springfield said they probably were.
