Default Patrol rifle

For those of you that get to carry a patrol rifle, what do you carry and why? What optics do you run?

Dept issued RRA Car A2. Why? Because that's what we get.

My current thinking on patrol rifle is KISS. Colt 6920 is ideal IMO. Your equipment needs to be able to be used effectively by whomever you have in your department that is not a gun-person, hence it should be the same as what accross the board.

The EOTech is great thing for those folks who have trouble shouldering and getting iron sight pictures from the support side.

I used to carry one of the gov't surplus M-16A1 for a few years but now carry a Knights Armament SR-15E3 with a Aimpoint T1.

Department issues OLD Colts....

We can buy and carry whatever we want though. Come time, I will either go with a Bushmaster or S&W MP15

Station Armory Pool guns. No issue, no personal purchase allowed.

One of the following depending on which is available:

Colt M16A1 with A2 handguard, RRA receiver with Eotech and fixed, co-witnessed BUIS.
Colt AR15A2 Carbine with 16" pencil barrel and A1 fixed stock...Same sights as above.
Colt M4 LE Carbine with Eotech and flip up BUIS (co-witnessed)

If I'm lucky it'll have a sling. No mods allowed.

Colt LE6920

Optic: Aimpoint T-1 w/LT-660 mount

I have seen alot of rails on patrol rifles but I'm trying to figure out why. We don't have IR designators or anything high speed. I've asked a few people and all I get is "It's cool."

When people pick up my rifle, the first thing they say is it's simple and light.

I went with a TactiLink single point sling, Magpul (have a hook up) CTR stock, MIAD, MBUS, MOE handguard, MVG and a Surefire M300A in a LT-172 mount.

The only thing I'd like to change is going to a BC 1.0 and an IWC Scout Mount for the MOE handguard and getting away from the MagPul Illumination kit.

I can only wish they would approve Noveske. I am jealous.

Since you have a T1 and M4. Which do you prefer? I have been getting cash offers from a friend to buy my T1 and I was going to go with the M4S and LaRue LT659.

The Colt with the M4s is relatively new. The Noveske with the T1 has been used a lot. I'm really sure yet which optic I like more.

Personally owner Bushmaster

M4 lower
Magpul MIAD
Magpul Winter trigger guard
6 position collapsible stock
Daniel Defense single point sling
Daniel Defense Omega Rail 7.0
Larue Tactical fixed BUIS
Surefire M910 Forend grip light
LMT 14.5" upper receiver.

Every option works well and is fairly lightweight. I dont carry optics anymore because it wont fit in the rack with them and I like my rifle up front with me. Make sure you have a light on your gun and a good sling

I have a sneaking suspicion we work for the same place.

Do you have this with a surefire light mounted and a tape switch on the handguards?

I hate all of you with your fancy doo-dads and doo-hickies on your fancy rifles. My dept is using cold war era military surplus rifles (ARs) with an Eotech sight. The only problem is, it takes an act of Congress to even get a spot in the qualification course. And then, once qualified, you need another act of cobgress to get into the re-qual every year (another eihgt hour course).

Supossedly, we are issuing M4s out to the stations now. Each station will get a whopping 2 M4s. Then as more become available, they will issue as needed.

My partner used to work for Rialto PD (trying to get back there again), and he told me his Chief issues letters for almost anything! Once back in the fold, he is planning on getting a letter for an FN SCAR! Really? A SCAR!?

Personal (An Option with our Dept):
Bushmaster XM15 - Heavy Brl
Vltor E-Mod
V-Tac Tactical Sling on LBV
SureFire Millenium Light Forend
Trijicon Night Sight - Co-Wit with EOTech 552
Going with Grip Pod as soon as they're approved.
Exclusively on PMAGs

The issued systems are literally Vietnam era M16s mod'd to Semi...they still work though!

Have you seen the reflex RX09? It has a amber chevron that is quick to pick up but you can still do fairly precise shooting with it. Love mine.

I carry a Colt 6940 with Aimpoint M4S, Surefire E2D light, VLTOR butstock, Magpul grip and Bluforce Vickers 2 point.

I wish I would have purchased a piston rifle instead. piston rifles are much cleaner and function more smoothly. They eliminate the issues of ejection when the case is expanded.

LWRC or POF are great choices for piston rifles.

I carried the department issued Bushmaster with YHM rail and Aimpoint M3. It was heavy and clunky and I had feeding issues with it.

I now carry a personaly owned KAC SR-15 with an Aimpoint T-1 and a Surefire X300. Reason? Weight and reliability. It's light as a feather.
