San Diego Rod and Gun Club..What is pistol range like?
Hi, finally getting a day off, really want to shoot outdoors. It's tough to find outdoor places in San Diego.
I was wondering what the pistol range is like? Are there metal targets for example? Are there prescribed distances? The reason i ask is i'm not sure what to bring with me. Also, was hoping to build some of my competition skills...multiple targets etc. if possible. Thank you. |

I only shoot on the main (Rifle) range so I don't know how the pistol range works, but...
http://sbrgc.org/Resources/Documents/July%2014.pdf Page 2 has contact information for the guys who have the answers. I would try Chief Range Safety Officer: Tom Gaines, 619-421-2308.

There is a 3 lane pistol range (Range 5A) next to the trap range (Range 5) that goes to 40 yards.
Range 3 goes to 100 yards Range 2 to 50 yards Range 1 to 35 yards. If you have your own metallic targets, it needs to be at least 36" off the ground and at least 40 yards out, or all the way back to the berm, LRSO has final say if it is safe or not. Have fun out there!

Check out the range calendar on the day you decide to go. The pistol ranges could be reserved and you'd have wasted a trip. http://sbrgc.org/page-1475589

If the shotgun range is not being used during the week, the 3 lane pistol can be used when the other pistol ranges are reserved. That is why it was built.
The shotgun range is used on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month in the mornings, but other than that, during the week, you should be able to always have a place to fire your pistols at SBR&GC. Quote:

There are sandbags and spare target stands that may be used to "hold down" the target stands, plus there may be slivers of wood out on the range that can be used to "tighten up" the target holders at the base of the stand. The next time I find some of those old style wooden cloths pins, I will keep those in my range bag for that purpose.

Have to admit I like your idea of the cloths pin better though.

I would think as long as you are safe and have control of your firearm in the right direction towards the target, no one would have a reason to say anything.

Glad you made it out there and joined. Please consider becoming an RO next. Doesn't cost you a penny. Just 3 days of your choice to train, and then 1 day a month and you will have some great benefits.

I've been out to South Bay twice for our ship's small arms qualifications. They always treat us well out there and the range is definitely spacious. I'm considering getting a membership based on my two visits alone.

San Diego Police Revolver Club has a 25 yard outdoor line, another option. Bullseye only from what I understand. Kind of cool in that it's a "safe" range so you can pull your targets while the line is still hot.

Just did my third training day at South Bay today and should be picking my duty day soon. Doing with a buddy, so enjoyment is greater and logistics easier. Great way to see/handle/even shoot lots of different firearms you might otherwise not see, and even get some shooting in during lulls or slow days. And of course meets lots of shooters.
Police Revolver Club is classic. Unsupervised range, outdoors, old-time San Diego river rock buildings. Great place to sight in a handgun @ 25 yards from a rest. Relaxed. And the odd pleasure of shooting right in the middle of San Diego suburban sprawl. |
