Default 4x4 Camping at Gold Lake

Well decided to put some scratches on my truck and explore someplace I ain't been before. So went on over to Gold Lake 4x4 campgrounds past weekend to goof off and relax. Took my girlfriend, my brother, the dog, and some others out with me. Was a darn good time, lots of beer and BBQ. I brought my Traeger Tailgater so we could have some high torque smoked Ribs, burgers, corn, and a host of fixens. Highly recommend the place! Met some good folk out there.

Road to the camp really only has 1 crux, and thats the "gatekeeper." But I saw plenty of people bringing up stock toyotas (4runner, tacos, and tundras), full sized trucks, and a range rover owner more insane than me to scratch up new paint. I have a Dodge 2500 Power Wagon; so the whole thing was pretty easy. My brothers 94 YJ did good, but didnt have locking diffs so couldn't take as aggressive lines as I did in the trails beyond the camp. I did get stuck in some snow where the water actually ate away at the road causing my rear end to slide down the hill a bit. But I just winched myself out. We were going to do snake lake trail, but a team of about four Toyota 4runners/XJ's went up. Only 1 had lockers, and after 3 hours of waiting (we had lunch and cheered them on and drank for them) we bailed back to the lake. So I'll have to return to complete that!
Lake temp was awesome and lots of trout. Did some Kayaking. Only annoyance was some fellers shooting at like 3AM. But other than that it was a good time! Oh I was in campsite 13 I think. and the toilets there are still non operational.

Nice, haven’t been up there in several years. Did you go in Downieville or Sierraville?

Yea it was some good looking scenery, and i was impressed that there wasnt too much trash around. Campsites were nice and the Sierra Buttes were epic and still snow capped. Did you take that scout up there?

I came through Downieville, I live in Grass Valley so it was the most direct route, taking 49 at Nevada City.

Yea I'm lucky being so close to lots of great 4x4 and camping. Last time I took my 7.3L out to Lindsey lake and that was a blast. Forgot to post that up though haha. Not really much technical though.

I have an AT truck topper coming for the Power Wagon so hoping to explore everything out there haha! And thankfully my lady loves the adventure!

For a change of pace, next time go up through or back home that way. Really doesn’t add too much time. Lots of great spots easily accesible from 49, 70, 89. Best part is finding them.

You can spend a lifetime in the foothills and find something new every day. I know I have.

Next you need to build a crawler. Then you can get to the really good spots.

On the roof, maybe in the bed. Think small aluminum boats, 13’ and under. These spots usually are restricted to small outboards, or no motorized craft period. Although I have seen some people drag trailers into spots they wished they never did.

I don’t recall a real ramp or launch at Gold, but it has been a while. I’m sure OP can say for certain.

Crawler is next, I'm thinking about hacking up my 7.3L truck and making it a crawler. I like to bring full sized to be different, but my jeep buddies want me to do Fordyce...which full size will suck at some of the turns. Well see.

Gold Lake is in norcal, North of downville and near Greagle. Of of 49. Out on the sticks, but it's a very scenic drive.

So the old boat ramp at the end of the campgrounds is pretty cruddy and overgrown. However at the entrance to the place there is a new boat ramp and people had their large size bass boats and wave runners.

There is a whole section at one end of the lake you can have motorhomes and regular cars. The bathrooms are gone at the 4x4 side but still at the car camping area. And each campsite had a decent table, bear box, and fire ring.

The Lakes Basin area is full of lakes and great hiking trails. And some nice lodges if that's your cup of tea.

Lots of nice country there and close by. The first week I had my brand new 4 door Wrangler I scratched both sides on the road to Upper Sardine Lake.

According to the Forest Service website bathrooms are scheduled to get done this summer at the 4x4 campground.

My old stomping grounds.
Used to get back there before there was ever a campground.
Used to 4x4 over the top to the Boy Scout camp and into Spencer lakes and down through Eureka peak and Johnsville.
Before they put the HIGHWAY up there. Was a lot of fun

Grew up in Graeagle.

I was at the boat dock Friday with some friends. A lot of wind.
Was there any rain Sunday?
A beautiful place.

When I was there it did not rain, did on the drive from Grass Valley a little though. However the first few camp sites were swamps and mudbowls. And the marsh near my camp was flowing good across the road. My campsite was nice and raised.

Nice. I camped just outside of Sierra City past Downieville this weekend. Definitely gonna check out Gold Lake next time. It's so beautiful up there!

Edit: It did rain on us Sat. Night/Sun morn. Not too bad.

Are the campers permitted to wear flip flops?

I forgot about this thread. Back then around 1980 my dad had a black diesel Scout II that we took up there with a small 12 foot aluminum boat on top. We went to a lot of those lakes like upper and lower Sardine and upper and lower Salmon, Gold lake and a few more. Almost none of those lakes had boat ramps then so we carried our little aluminum boat, motor, gas tank, and fishing gear into the lakes through trees and rocks. I caught the biggest Rainbow Trout of my life at the time in Lower Sardine Lake. It was 25 inches and a beauty. I will get up there again someday.

25 inches!!! Freaking salmon! Yea don't expect to see that ever again haha.

I love the scout, I had a scout II for high school I got running but I stupidly sold it when I went to sea. Used to take it all over cow mountain in lake county where I grew up. Wish I kept it because it's insane how they have come back onto the scene and how much they cost for even severely body rotten rigs.

Can't wait to get back out there and explore more!
