Default Steel targets at shooting ranges

Does anybody know of any ranges in Southern California that allow me to shoot at steel targets?

I have some steel knockdown targets that I would love to bring out again for pistol shooting, but nobody allows them anymore. I have even asked if I could bring 100% aluminum targets that have no risk of sparking, and they say no, absolutely no metal targets. They won't even allow them on their private ranges.

I have asked multiple different ranges what the reason behind the no metal rule is, and none of them can ever answer my question. A couple just got mad at me and hung up the phone.

I used to shoot steel knock downs at Burro Canyon all the time, and I even see them sitting there still, every time I go. I just don't get what the reasoning behind this is.

There is nothing more fun than racing a friend on steel targets, and I would love to do that again soon.

Oak tree gun club has a steel pistol and rifle range, rifle is out to about 100 yards.

You also get stuck using the shooting line, which is always packed to the gills. I wish they had private ranges

Raahauges lets you shoot steel in their back bays. Also Lytle Creek let's you put steel out at 100 yards.

You can always go here. They already have steel set up every 100 yards out to 887 yards. Enjoy. http://www.ncsapala.com/

burro will allow you to shoot steel, as long as you can prove you carry the needed fire insurance that if a fire breaks out, you can pay for the fire response to put it out. i believe it is usually in the million dollars and above coverage since those air drop helicopters or planes aren't cheap.

Raahauges. You get a personal bay to yourself.

I shoot at steel with pistol and rifle at both the West End Gun Club and Desert Marksmen range facilities.

Both membership required, though. WEGC is waitlisted for full membership, but Desert Marksmen is still taking in members as far as I know.

Angeles is filled with steel targets for pistols (you cannot place your own)
and has steel targets at 100 yards and farther for rifles. (I have seen people place their own at closer distances for .22lr rifles they were sighting in).

The only time they had an issue with people placing their own targets down range is if people placed their targets too close to the wood target bases. They don't want their bases destroyed.

Rainbow range allows steel targets. Pala has pre-set steel targets (rumor has it that Pala range might be expanding to allow more public access).

Raahauges is very choosy about where you can use steel. Last time i was there i was on a back bay and got a firm no to steel

Lytle creek allows you to put steel out and has a few small steel targets at 100 and 200 yards

There are a few choices if you want to just shoot steel ringers, but I am looking for a place that will allow me to setup a race tree, or some knock down targets.

At Raahauges you have to tell them that you are using steel so they can put you at the appropriate bay. Some bays have longer distances to accommodate steel.

Please note however if you go on weekends, they wait times can get long.

Angeles is great. The only thing I don't like is the long time gap between shooting and arranging your targets.

I agree, but that is just what you are stuck with, using a shared shooting line.

That's the other reason for wanting to use knock downs, as I just pull a cable, and I can reset them.

Angeles has private ranges and you can use steel targets on many of them.

Are you sure? I've asked, and they always say that they don't have private ranges.

They might not rent them to the public, but they certainly DO have private ranges.
I run a rifle club.
We have our own insurance and NRA certified range safety officers.
They rent private ranges to our club.

I know there have been Calguns shoots organized on the private Angeles ranges.
They require you to hire their range safety officers if you don't have your own people who are certified.

That makes sense. I'll definitely have to get in on the Calguns shoot next time.

You can skip using their RSOs at Angeles for the private ranges if you have an insurance policy.

His biggest issue is the ability to rapid fire.
Most public ranges will not allow it except on their private ranges.
