The supposed benefit of microstamping is that a spent casing can be matched the gun that fired it. Unfortunately the proponents of this technology don't seem to understand that shooting ranges have thousands of spent casings lying on the ground, just waiting for someone to pick them up. Also, the stamp could easily be ground off of the firing pin by someone with a metal file and two minutes of time.

Man I wish I had read this back before I bought my first pistol. I got lucky and my shield is a great gun but I didn’t make the decision based on what I should have. Awesome article.

Don't fool yourself. They understand. Originally, when there was only the drop test, it may have been about safety and even that was unnecessary because manufactures would correct any problems to avoid civil liability. Now it is about limiting the availability of handguns in CA and has little to do with safety or law enforcement. This is abundantly clear because LEOs can purchase off roster guns and those fortunate enough to have a parent, child or grandparent in a free state can still get off roster handguns.

One need not have a parent or child who lives out of state to purchase and off-roster pistol.

Check the marketplace and you will find plenty of off-roster pistols,

although they are priced at a premium to reflect their reduced availability...

And yes, the roster has nothing to do with safety,

rather it is entirely intended to reduce gun availability and purchases.
