Smith & Wesson Airweight 38's guaranteed on roster for 2017?
I can't get one right now due to 1 in 30, but I want to put a 638 on layaway to lock in a good price.
But I won't be able to get it until next month. It has me worried that I may throw a down payment away if it doesn't come back on roster. But it's an Airweight Smith and they're always unchanged and come back on roster. But anything could happen I suppose. Any guarantees that they'll be there when I want to finish paying? What should I do? |

Nothing is guaranteed until the company pays the mordita for the gun.
If you're worried, check the S&W press release page at their web site.

Theres usually plenty in the private sales. I just got a 442 no lock and OMG i Love it. I put the Hogue bantam grips on it and i was shooting it just as well as my fullsize guns. Its an awesome lil gun.
If i were you, id figure out a way to buy it now, just to be safe. |

However, if you want something that you will carry IWB/OWB, a steel model like the 640 might be a better choice. Or even a 3" Chief's Special. I haven't had operational problems with my 642 but recently a gunsmith found it had some excessive wear; required a barrel replacement and yoke repair at the factory. This was a gun that was well cared for and was not fed a steady diet of +P. Round count slightly over 1200. I may have had one that left the factory a little tweaked, but downside to the aluminum frames is that it is more susceptible to wear and tear. That said, I like J-frames better than almost any other handgun. For me, they fit my hand better than semi-autos. I have toyed with the idea of going to all-revolver for carry and home protection but haven't made the leap - mostly because I appreciate the Glock platform and simplicity and it's hard to argue against the extra 6 rounds.

Call or eMail S&W.
It is the only way to know for sure. .

I went with the 442. I checked the calender and if I time it right I should be able to pick it up Friday the 30th or Saturday the 31st if my lgs doesn't do anything weird like closing for New Year's.

If it actually dropped off the roster on 31 Dec, and you weren't in possession, you might be hosed; I'm trying I remember other similar situations and seems you have to be in possession while still active on the roster.
Nice choice though!

But, if things work out that you can't pick up inside 30 days, would have to re-DROS, and if it has fallen off the Roster, that will fail.

I have the older Model 38 & 49 and prefer them over the newer 442 that I just bought, but the 442 model is the only "no lock" version I could find. And it seems a few CA stores don't know of that version, carry only the lock version. For the same price I ordered the no lock and waited a bit.

I too have the 442 all black one. Its a pain in the butt hole to shoot accurately at distance but i trust it with my life as a back up for contact shots. If you can find one, buy one. If i had an extra i would sell it to you but unfortunately i only have the one and will not let it go. Good luck.
