Sig MPX-P: to convert or not convert?
I am very fortunate to have a Sig MPX pistol, and it is one of my favorite firearms ever. I would someday like to pass this on to my son, but with the new CA laws it looks like I will either have to register it as an AW, or convert to carbine with BB 2.0 or featureless carbine.
What do you all think??? |

If you want to pass it to your son, correct me if im wrong, but you can deregister it and give it to him (convert to featureless)... Just make sure you know the exact date youre going to kick the bucket.

This makes sense... register now and use as intended for the rest of my life, and convert to featureless if that is even possible in 40 yrs from now. Plasma guns will be all the rage by then anyways.

How old is your son now? If he will be 18 or more by 12/31/2017, you may be able to register it under his name and yours.

How does that work? I thought once SB880 takes effect, an assault weapon can only be registered to a single person?

In 16 years, pick out a college out of state, be sure he pays his own way for at least one year(loans) and for the year don't claim him as an exemption on your income tax. Make him get a local Driver's License, bank locally where he is, let him register his car and register to vote there. Then, the following year, he'll decide to buy his own MPX-P out of your generous pocket money. After that, he can move back into the state

Can't make it featureless as a handgun. The magwell is a feature.

As long as you are in the immediate vicinity, you can let little McStuffins shoot your registered MPX pistol, so you can register it comes 2017 and wait on the carbine conversion.

Any pistol with a non-fixed magazine well outside of the grip is automatically an assault weapon. Up until the new law, bullet buttons could be used to make the external mag well "fixed" but as you know that will no longer fly. Unless you find a way to move the magazine well into the grip (lol) the pistol will need to be registered as an AW Or you could turn it into a carbine with a fixed stock and 16" barrel, overall length of 30", and grip-wrap the pistol grip to make it featureless. Hard to find right now. Supposedly Sig will be selling barrels / caliber conversion kits that would work but they are behind schedule as usual. Same with uppers. Maybe give Sig a call and get more up to date info? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

AFAIK...
The ARMagLock and Patriot Mag Lock (BB Reloaded) are not compatible with the SIG MPX, due to dimensionally differences in the receivers. No one is currently offering a new magazine locking mechanism for the SIG MPX that will comply with the new fixed magazine definition. |

He either stays out of state (not a bad option, given how deep blue the state is and our current tax situation), or hope the featureless option remains an option in 16 years (which I sincerely doubt.) I missed my chance to freedom in the 1990's when I decided to move back to CA to start this career. My brothers, who decided to move to MO and TX, are much better off. I myself am hoping my daughter would find a good job in a free state (not NY, NJ, CT or CO) so I can move closer to her upon retirement. To remain in the state as a taxpayer is a losing proposition. It's nirvana for those getting freebies from the .gov though.

I would like to find either a replacement Sig MPX pistol barrel to add a >16 pin/weld muzzle device or a 16-in barrel outright (which Sig has not yet produced as a part).
