While not strictly a SHTF movie, Happy People: A year in the Taiga is an excellent film and a real eye-opener for those who think that when the stuff does fly, they're going to bug out to the mountains and live off the land (without ever having lived in the wild before of course).
The film is about the trappers and hunters living off the land in and around an utterly remote village in Siberia. The film offers some good tips for how to make such essential items as skis and animal traps should you ever find yourself bugged out in the frozen north and needing to survive. -Mark

The Quick and the Dead (1995 film) A good SHTF western. Gene Hackman plays a very, very bad man. It's the Mad Max of westerns.

Ebola hit the fan movie
There is also the totally exploitative Hong Kong film called "ebola syndrome." Guy that is infected but is not ill. Does his best to infect others by any means possible, including just spitting on them. Can't say its a very good or realistic movie. Ebola Syndrome 1996 UNCUT: free on YouTube. Skip to the very end a dog licks up ebola vomit than shares dessert with kid. Remind you of recent events? Last edited by bonusweb; 10-18-2014 at 11:13 PM.. |

Disaster L.A. (2014) Low budget but not bad. Suspenseful, but you might be yelling at the people for not really doing things right. Tossing firearms when empty, losing radios, having emotional moments at inopportune times etc. But as these characters are stereotypical millennials, it is total believable. "The Road"
Very well made. Trailer might say otherwise, but the movie is one of the best i'd say. This movie to me, looks like a more realistice scenario compared other movies. Must Watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO8E...ature=youtu.be Last edited by Armed-Citizen; 12-08-2014 at 11:44 AM.. |

Can anyone recommend a SHTF movie that is somewhat along the lines of being realistic?
By "realistic" I mean something that poses a scenario that is not off the deep end like zombies, aliens, giant ants, etc.. I am looking for something that depicts the thin veneer of society quickly falling away and how people adapt to that. The Road was pretty good. The Day After was pretty good, especially for something made 30 years ago. |

T.V. series "Jericho" was kinda what you suggest. Before, during and after SHTF. No zombies-aliens or North Koreans. Sent using a long string & 2 cans.

No Blade of Grass
I am technically challenged. About five years ago, a friend sent me a link to a DIVX movie, "No Blade of Grass." I saw the movie somewhere in the South China Sea in 1971. I have read the novel that was written in the 1950, too. I can't find the link I was sent, and I can't figure out how to go into DIVX and watch it again. The movie is not available on DVD.
The plot deals with a virus that spreads across the Earth. It attacks and kills the grass family. Of course, the grass family includes wheat, oats, barley, rye, rice, etc., the staples of life. The death of the grass family does not mean that humanity will perish, however. (It is possible on one acre of ground, for example, to raise potatoes that provide five times the calories that one acre of wheat will provide.) The transition to non-grass family food-types, however, means disaster in the short term. I will not describe the plot further, but the movie is worth a look. It is dated, but interesting. Something I found very interesting is that the lead character, who comes across more like a David Niven-type, is the same fellow who played the gruff color sergeant in "Zulu." Now that is "range." |
