Default To Build a Fire

Found this 50 minute movie on Youtube. Really well made. It is an adaptation from Jack London's short story, To Build a Fire. It was made in 1969 and narrated by Orson Wells.

As you watch it, try to identify the the bad decisions, assumptions and cascade failures.

Since the butane in a BIC evaporates at around 33F (the liquid phase does not burn), one might have to take special care to keep the lighter warm in cold weather, as depicted in the story/video.

Wear the lanyard around one's neck, inside coats, etc. I suppose.

at -20F it only takes about 15 seconds to warm it up in your hand to get a cigar lit with a bic lighter.

The Snow Walker movie has all of the elements of survival. IMO it's a 5 star survival flick.

the film is about a Canadian bush pilot whose life is changed through an encounter with a young Inuit woman and their challenge to survive the harsh conditions of the Northwest Territories following an aircraft crash.

That's why you wear it on a lanyard. Even in a front pocket of a shirt you are good to go. KISS.

Same applies to those small butane stoves. I will put the fuel can at the bottom of my sleeping bag while camping so that I can make coffee in the morning.

Hot Spark kit. I used to use those in school demonstrations to kids when I worked for the Boy Scouts. STILL have one on my keychain.
