2nd Annual California Action Shotgun Challenge Sept 28-29, 2013
The 2nd Annual California Action Shotgun Challenge (Known as CASC 2013) will be held on Sept 28-29, 2013. Sept 28th will be for Staff and RO's, Sept 29th will be for general competitors. This event will be held on the action range at the Richmond Rod & Gun Club, 3155 Goodrick Ave, Richmond, CA.
One major change over last year. There will be dedicated RO's this year. Not knowing how popular the match was going to be last year, it was decided early that it would be officiated by the experienced shooters on the squads, this year we will have match staff that will make for a more efficient running of the match. With that, the match capacity for Sunday will probably be 72 shooters, give or take. The divisions will remain pretty much the same. Rules have been completed and are available at the link below. The entry form is now available. There will be a minimum of 5 stages. With dedicated RO's, we may make it 6. With fewer shooters and dedicated RO's on the stages, it will mean stages will turn around faster and we can get done earlier. The build starts on Friday.. Sat is for the RO's to shoot and proof the stages for the match.. hence the 28-29 match days.. likely we will build on the 27th, finish building on the 28th and then have the staff shoot once stages are safety checked..

With the Handgun Open nationals conflicting with the date of this match, I've been informed by at least a few competitors from last year that they won't be able to help me out.. Losing people to another major match has always been an issue and I am reconsidering the date for this match. If you are hell bent on the dates for this match, let me know here in the thread.. if you are going to the nationals instead and would like to see this match moved to an earlier date so you can attend, let me know.. Thanks!

I've looked at the schedule and I guess I'm going to keep it on the dates as posted.. I have 2 entries right now.. I know that at least a handful of people who made it last year won't be making it this year. I think I may do like the BARC and pay for people to officiate. Contact me via PM if you are interested in being a range officer. I will need 5 range officers.

Well.. let's hear it.. what sort of things do you all want this year?
More steel? Clays? Slugs and buck appear to be hard to come by.. so I'm hesitant on requiring them unless we can secure a source.. Larger stages? Fast shooting and some distance? I can guarantee there will be aerials.. what kind of aerials I won't say at this point.. maybe a bunny again.. |

How are you going to be negotiating the flippers and spinners?
At the last shotgun practice we were understandably restricted from using them, what can be done to make them useable at Richmond?

The flippers and spinners will be fine in bays 1-4. Much higher berms there.

Bay 5 has restrictions that 1-4 do not. There are some other newer clay throwers that are a lot more reliable than the ones we have used in the past. It is my intention to get some of these. They were used at the Superstition match in AZ. Again I'm looking for things that ppl want. The lack of ammo means I don't want to require something no one can get.
Any thing else? |

I always like longer stages with high (20+) round counts. If possible, competitors should have to move during the stage as well. High round counts force competitors not only to reload more often, but also think about how many rounds should be loaded during the stage to effectively clear targets without going dry or loading too many.
Swingers. I really like swingers. Again, they make you think, rather than just blast. The concern about slug and buckshot availability is a valid one. But shooting different ammo types is a key feature of the shotgun. Perhaps keep the round count down to five (one box) of each. I would love stages which compelled you to use slugs or buckshot during or in the middle of a birdshot stage (instead of dedicated slug and/or buckshot stages). The idea is to make competitors think about what's in the gun and what they're loading. This is a regular feature of our local shotgun matches. The common complaint about such stages is that they present safety threats, if for example a competitor accidentally shoots a slug at a steel target. These can be mitigated by creative stage design. For example, have the competitor shoot at three clays on stands before engaging two paper slug/buckshot targets, then three more clays on stands. This way, if there's a goof-up the competitor has only fired the wrong shell at either a paper target or a clay. The competitor gets a penalty or a DQ, but nobody's hurt and no targets are ruined. Aerial targets are great. Again, being able to engage fast-moving targets is a key feature of the shotgun. I understand clays (whether thrown by a trap or a popper) present logistical and set-up challenges, but a few aerial targets would be fantastic. Creativity. The 'home defense' stage last year was great. 'Breaching' the door with the Serbu was good too. My two cents. Thanks for reading. EDIT... Vince,
You can count me in for set up help, RO help or dedicated gopher. I am up for some aerial and moving targets (bunny / swingers / stars) as I think they are made for the scatter guns we shoot. I have a supply of slugs and could be persuaded to sell/donate 40 or 50 to the match. I like the ideas of slugs and buckshot, lets mix it up! Mike yeah, I will get my app in...

I guess I could make the stages require certain ammo and if match day comes and not everyone has what they need, I could take a poll the day of the match and build in options.. (say slug/buck on certain paper targets). I may build in the door again but you'd breach it with your own scattergun this time.. The Serbu was fun, but concern for stage fluidity and set up time is being taken into acct. It might come back though, we'll have to work with it.. Was having it off the clock something liked/disliked?

Is it really that hard to get slugs and buck? Ammoman shows both in stock for what seems to be close to pre-craziness prices, ~$1/round delivered. http://ammoman.com/12-gauge

I have no idea how hard slugs/buck are to get.. This year we will have a small amount of ammo for sale.. taking the ammo change ups to heart.. I'll say right now we'll require maybe 20 slugs or buck for now (your choice).. and be prepared for tiny clays to pop up here and there.. might even have some aerial ones..
