Question EDC Fixed Blade - Scout/Horizontal Carry

Hey guys. Im sorry if this has been covered before. I would like to carry a fixed blade, scout style, on my belt. A couple of questions for you:

1 - If my shirt covers the knife, does that make it concealed? I typically wear a t-shirt and on occasion a button down, but typically never tucked in. CA law says that you can carry any fixed blade as long as it is not concealed and worn hanging from the hip.

2 - What do you guys like/carry? I was looking at a schrade or gerber ghost strike on the cheaper end. Also ESEE knife on the higher end. HUGE price difference.

Any suggestions or recommendations are much appreciated.

1-yes, if the knife is concealed by a shirt you are not open carrying it. Also some cities ban the carry of fixed blades check the municipal codes where you plan to carry.

2- I carry a buck 110, nothing fixed.

The state allows it, but watch out for city/county issues.
Los Angeles for one...

Out of curiosity, why do you want to carry a fixed blade?

Is the knife going to be a backup / primary weapon, or for utility work ?

There are some restrictions on fix blades, so check your state local laws.

K- bar also makes the TDI Blades with kydex carriers, I like esse or tops blades for fix blades, but also carry spydercos because of the laws around here.

Fix blades are stronger than folders, but if you want speed of deployment- look at the Emerson wave knives they are a nice feature.

I considered carrying a pocket folder, but my pockets are usually full. Phone, wallet, keys, etc. Would rather have something on a belt carried horizontally. I i have no other choice then I can carry a pocket folder.

It would be to open the occasional box or package, but primarily would be carried for defense.

You are going to have problems EDC carrying a fixed blade for defense in CA. City/county codes ban the carry of fixed blades, and you can't conceale it. If your shirt covers it, you are in violation of the law. For defense just get a folder and put it in a belt sheath if your pockets are full.

Here is a video of the TDI fixed blade knife, Esse or Tops would also be good.

I have the smaller TDI ( $ 40-50 ) , but carry a spyderco folder. Good luck.

What about a folder clipped to your pants “appendix carry” style?

I carry a Scharade Sharpfinger fixed blade. It is small enough to not look all “Rambo”. It’s inexpensive but stronger than most folders. You can deploy it much faster than a pocket folder.
