Default CCW in Mendocino?

Does anyone know what the current status of CCW permits in Mendocino?

I know Sheriff Allman well. He honors the second amendment and will issue to responsible law-abiding citizens who want to exercise their right to self-defense outside the home. Here is a link to their website.

Yes ... Sheriff Allman is a good person ... a modern day Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry. I've known Tom for 20 years now.

Works like this; you complete the class and range live fire qualifying course, pay fees, fill out the necessary application, GC Statement (they tell you) consists of two (2) words 'Personal Protection' NOTHING else...!

Your background checks out, you get 1 on 1 with Sheriff Dept. ... 2 to 3 weeks later ... you get your CCW/LTC in the mail.

Hit the link flyer posted ^^^ for more info.

It's like this; go to the 2 day class at Ukiah Gun Club - I suggest Ray Higbee, get's you in and outta there. I've been involved with guns all my life so ... I chose Ray Higbee (Sat & Sun class and you are done). Go to this link for his phone number and just call him http://www.ukiahgunclub.com/html/ccw.html He will explain what you need to do. Don't be afraid to call - Ray is very popular, gets calls all the time. He usually has 40 to 60 people per class. Additionally, there are at least 6 to 8 range safety officers assisting Ray with overall safety for everybody, whether on the firing line or in the rotation.

However, if you are in need of more in depth training look up Robert 'Bob' Nishiyama - at Mendocino College ... this is a 40 hour class and costs a little more money. In depth, and less people.
MENDOCINO COMMUNITY COLLEGE - 4140
1000 HENSLEY CREEK ROAD
UKIAH, CA 95482
(707) 468-3234 THIS COURSE MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF PC 832 ARREST - 40 HOURS.
Plan: NA. No POST financial reimbursement
Cost: Non-Reimbursable Tuition: $75.00
Certified Hours: 40

Wow. Only $75 for a 40 hour class. You don't see many deals like that anymore.

Ya ... that's really great! - And about half that 40 hour class time is live fire training at Ukiah Gun Club (really nice place).

As I said above; you want in and out burger style, Sat 4 hr. class/4 hr. live fire and Sun 4 hr. class/4 hr. live fire ... bing bang boom CCW on the way...!

Or ... the home cooked meal 40 hr. class firearms training.

You decide.

Both Ray and Bob are very knowledgeable and good instructors. If you are reasonably proficient with a handgun Ray's class is appropriate. If you are a newer shooter you might be better off with Bob's class.

They recently went to an on-line process for both new CCWs and renewals. It doesn't seem to be more efficient.

I took the renewal class on 6-2-2017, filled in the on-line form + scanned in all of the requested documents on 6-7-2017 (I was out of town between 6-2 and 6-7).

It is still "in processing" as of today (6-26-2017) and my permit expired yesterday. No way to check on progress, even though I visited the Sheriff's office, I have to wait for a call from them.

The new on-line process sucks, even the lady I talked to at the Administration office agreed.

Also, the renewal classe are held on weekdays, not weekends and only once a month. Tough to be able to get to one if you are a full time worker.

While your new process sucks, it still beats the heck out of Sonoma Co. Apparently your lives up there are worth more than ours down here because we aren't allowed to defend ours. Be thankful!

Oh, I am very thankful. I'm just whining a bit. The reps from the Sheriffs office used to attend the new and renewal classes and work with applicants to fill out all the paperwork and get the thumbprint, etc. Then we just had to wait until it showed up in the mail. They don't do that anymore, we actually have to go down to the office and finish up there, as well as turn in our current permit. Darn, I have a stack of my former permits, I would like to add this one to it.

What handgun limits are there? Do the guns need to be on the roster? Can we have more than three?

Prior to the "on-line" new/renewal process, there was no stated limit. With the on-line forms, the stated limit is three guns. I entered four and was told that there is a $20.00 charge for more than three guns. No problem, to me it is worth it.

There is no mention of roster status. All guns on the license do have to be registered to the carrier.

Permit finally ready so I picked it up on 7-27. The process is still clunky but they are working on improving it. The service they contracted with to do the on-line process is capable of producing plastic cards with pictures (much like the Utah CCW I have). They are working towards this (some new equipment needs to be installed, etc.).

Once this all get ironed out, it should be a good method but there are a lot of bumps in the road right now.

Sheriff-elect Essick of Sonoma Co gives us some current (he probably just called those sheriffs and asked them), rough CCW estimates for Sonoma and nearby counties.

CCWs at 11:55 to 13:55

Sonoma pop.: 500k
#CCWs: 135

Solano pop.: 450k
#CCWs: "just under 6,000"

Mendo pop.: 90k
#CCWs: "about 3,000"

Thank you

Default Tom Allman Retiring in Mendocino County

I just read that Tom Allman is retiring in Mendocino County. One of the best friends of CCW in California.

This is tough for us to take, Tom has been a personal friend of ours for years. I hope his replacement stays as loyal to the CCW process that Tom has.

I'm about to have my ccw interview. I asked the secretary (not sure of her title) if Kendall was like minded with Allman. She assured me he was and thanked me for pursuing a ccw.

That is very good news (both that you are getting your CCW and that Matt Kendall is as on board with CCW issuance as Tom was).

I worked as a prosecutor in Mendocino County for many years. I first knew Tom Allman when he was the lieutenant commanding North County. I supported him to succeed retiring Sheriff Tony Craver (who I also knew and respected). Tom was a great sheriff. I knew Matt Kendall as well and he will likewise be a great sheriff for Mendocino County.
I am happy to be retired to Nevada and to have left the accelerating California crazy behind.

Mendocino. Meh, I could live there. Lots of beautiful country, clean air and not too many people. I'm guessing (could look it up) low crime rate, moderate taxes,
mellow traffic, maybe some good restaurants..........like that.

I just went through my renewal qualification and can say that the policy is pretty much the same as it has been under Allman and Craver.

All of the documents need to be in order (all are checked for accuracy) including proof of residence.

So, in order to apply you will need to show proof that you are a resident of Mendocino County (your DL, vehicle registration, utility bills, etc. need to have current address on them).

The Mendocino County website has all the info you need to apply.

https://mendocinosheriff.com/adminis...eapon-permits/

Well, it has been over a month since I submitted all of my paperwork for renewal and still have not heard from Matt Kindall. I keep asking for updates and I'm being continuously told the folder is in his hands.

I don't understand this. If he is indeed pro CCW he needs to get with the program. This is frustrating.

Update:

Got a phone call from Matt Kendall this Monday (8/30) and he signed my CCW license and it is ready to be picked up. He explained that he has been clobbered with a super heavy workload and apologized for the delay. I thanked him and told him I appreciated his call.

It's all good.

Flyer898 has it exactly correct - and as for Sheriff Kendall? I can tell you that far as CCW in Mendocino County is concerned, Sheriff Kendall is a straight shooter and same program as Sheriff Allman ... and Sheriff Craver for that matter.

I met with Sheriff Kendall soon after becoming Sheriff of Mendocino County and had a long chat about his Office and CCW.

I was at Diamond Jim's Sporting Goods back when Craver and Vroman ran the show ... wow !!! to be in the same room with Craver, Vroman, Tsarnas (owner of Diamond Jim's) all talking about the foundation of CCW at it's conception

Allman took the CCW reins from Craver and never skipped a beat. Same with Sheriff Kendall.

CCW is alive and well in Mendocino County.

Dan,
How far in advance did you take your requalification class before renewal? I haven't made any calls but can't find anything online about timeline for the refresher class.

I took the renewal class on Monday, 7/12. My license expired on 7/26. Sheriff website states that I cannot apply for renewal more than 30 days prior to license expiration date.

I turned in all of the documents right away. I had to add and clarify a few things (website was not correct in defining what the Sheriff's office really wanted). File was finally forwarded to the Sheriff on 8/5, several weeks after the start of the process. I pointed out many things that needed correcting as far as the renewal process that they took note of.

After several weeks of not hearing anything, I sent an e-mail on Monday 8/30 asking for an update and gently expressing my frustration at not hearing from the Sheriff (I was told on the 5th to expect a call from him the next day).

The next morning (8/31) I got a call from Matt Kendall saying he had signed my license and I could swing by and pick it up anytime (or he would personally deliver it but not until the following Saturday). He apologized for the delay saying he had been clobbered with high priority work over the past weeks.

I went to pick it up and was told I needed to call and make an appointment to pick it up. I explained that Matt had just called me and it was ready for pickup. I told Matt that I would jump in the truck and head over to the office as soon as I hung up. The lady went back and spent maybe 20 minutes getting everything in order. I was also told that I needed a check for $52.00 made out to Cal DOJ. I didn't have my checkbook with me so I ran home and got it.

In my opinion, the "new" web based process is far more complex, clunky, confusing and time consuming than the old manual process that would normally take a few days.

But I have it, laminated a copy and it is in my wallet good for the next two years.
