My husband signed us up for the Calguns Shotgun Clinic today. I've had experience with rifle and pistol, but not shotgun, and was a little apprehensive. My instructors were Don Ziegler and Richard "Captain Dick" Wilkinson. The class was inexpensive, and I didn't know how good it would be, how individualized, nor how qualified the instructors would be. Some people don't know their stuff and some people do, but don't know how to teach it. Don and Richard were great in all areas!
There were about half a dozen people with all different skill levels. Some were returning students, and darn good shots. Some were beginners, like me, and not that familiar with how their shotguns worked. The instructors were patient, but kept the class moving. Basically they were trying to help each participant become skilled in techniques that minimized their movement, while focusing on the shot. You learned specific movements to do each and everytime. A rationale was provided for why everything was done. At the end of class, I could understand the techniques and hit the bird (most of the time). I think I could really improve with an additional class. We moved throughout the course and received instruction every step of the way. The class was developed for each students' specific needs. It was just the perfect pace for me (it seemed a little fast at first, but it was new and a lot for me to grasp!). We even shot some doubles! I not only would look forward to returning, but I'd like to bring some other family. I didn't bring a shell bag and they had some for me and others to use. They had equipment available, just ask! They haven't put up the Calguns banner in a while, but they were easy to find, by just asking. There was a little confusion with the field assignment, but we got started on time and it didn't feel rushed. Some other notes: there is a restroom, running water...no portapotty) very close to where we shot (Nice!!!) There is plenty of free parking. There is a pro shop and a cafe and we got a hotdog and fries (Not bad). The pro shop has a liability waiver for you to sign in the store, but if you tell them you are with the CalGuns' class, you don't need to take the test. Clean, beautiful, nice people. Real close in El Monte, at a range that's been there over 30 years. Just south of the 60 freeway! Recommended fun! |

This shotgun course was definitely a great find. Both instructors Don Ziegler and Richard "Captain Dick" Wilkinson where fantastic. I come from long range shooting and shotguns are a whole new bucket for me. They have great techniques for teaching this new to me discipline of shooting, and I was taking down birds by the end of the course. I highly recommend this course to anyone trying to get a step up on this aspect of shooting. Thank Calguns, Don and Captain Dick.

Awesome clinic
This was such an awesome experience. We got great instruction for about 4 hrs and both Don and Richard were so helpful.
We learned a lot about movement and how important your feet and body work together. They were checking on us every step of the way and made sure our fundamentals were SOLID. Even if we didn't hit the bird, they were more interested in smoothing out our positioning, pivoting, eye focus, etc. We had a small group and I think everyone became much more skilled than when we first got there. I can't wait to come back and bring some others! Thanks! |

I took the clinic today and highly recommend it. It was a great experience and my shooting improved dramatically by the end. Both Coach Don and Captain Dick were wonderful teachers and really teach a great foundation to grow from. They are very generous to lend their time for such a low price. I will be for sure be going again after I pick up my new shotgun.

Excellent Clinic
I took Don Ziegler's Skeet Clinic today, and really enjoyed it. An interesting way to teach skeet, in that he deals with a multitude of "in comers" first, from varying positions. This helps you understand and see the different leads required from the various stations around the course. He then goes over the basics of "out goers," understanding that look.
Then, going to the doubles, he has an effective way of having you shoot the first bird twice, to get you thinking "out," rather than shooting the first bird, and then moving too quickly to the short side of the field. Don tells it like it is, but its clear what you need to do (and not do). I have shot maybe 15 rounds of skeet, but I needed this session on the basics, to have a more formal and definitive approach to the game. Now that I have the basics, I feel I can progress, with as much practice as I can get in. Thanks Don, as I said, one of the best investments I've made in my game.

I took the skeet clinic in June with a great group of fellow calguners. This was my second time in the class and I enjoyed the great coaching from Trapper John, Captain Dick, and Coach Don thoroughly. We had attendees of all levels and it was very educational to have advanced shooters along with beginners like myself. I can't say this enough, this is a remarkably easy and cost effective way to get started and advanced in clay shooting sports. I will be returning with a few additional rookies for the next session.
In the words of Coach Z, "stop thinking about it" and join the next class! |

Yes. I got a Trulock extended Skeet tube. They had a half price deal, when you fill out a survey. Nice choke!

Great Clinic
I was invited by some buddies for the clinic. It proved to be an excellent day shooting. The price is fantastic and you get the opportunity to learn from two competitive shooters (One Hall of Famer). How excellent is that.
The clinic ran about 4-4.5 hours and each coach had plenty of instruction time with each of the shooters. I have been a shooter for a long time, but never learned proper skeet stances. I learned a lot on my first clinic. We are all fired up to sign up again... |

Just attended the clinic yesterday and had a great time. Learned a lot, failed to execute some of the time, then started putting things together.
Will definitely be back soon. Thanks Don and Capt. Dick! Sent from my Moto Z (2) using Tapatalk |
