More crowds on the weekends, just like any other range.
When the weather is anything remotely 'iffy' on a weekday, Los Altos might have 1-3 people shooting rifles, tops. That's the best time to go up there IMO. Metcalf/Fields is always warmer/sunnier, and open until 8pm on Thursdays staring in May which is cool. I think Los Altos has a few more rifle lanes overall. |

Depends. At Metcalf, from my experience the 100 yard lanes don't fill up like the 50 yd. lanes, sometimes I see people waiting around for those. I've never seen huge lines or anything so if there's a wait it might not be that long.
I don't remember seeing anybody waiting around at Los Altos. |

Last time I was at metcalf at 8:10 am on a Sunday.(opens at 8) and I got the last 100yd lane available. Everytime I leave around noon there's also a crowd waiting for a lane and no parking.

Go early and get whatever lane you wish. Last time I got there at 7:45am and had my pick of the lanes.

w/the nicer weather, los altos seems to be a bit busier nowadays.
i always go at 9am sunday for los altos... i end up w/any rifle lane i want. i do notice by 11am, the 50yd rifle ranges are full and the 100yd rifle is beginning to fill up. i'd say go early wherever you decide! |

I prefer Los Altos over Metcalf. LA has its busy points, but if you get there at opening generally you have a relaxed laid back time on the rifle line and leave by noon, when the people that slept in show up and really start to fill the place. I have had to wait about fifteen minutes for a spot once shooting clay pigeons but never on the rifle line. Shooting clay pigeons on a clear day up there is an experience by itself.
