Default AR with thumb trigger: does this have a pistol grip?

https://www.ironhorsefirearms.com/t-o-r

since there's no exposed portion of the trigger, does it legally have a pistol grip?

I would say yes as it protrudes below the action

for anyone who hasn't seen the legal definition of pistol grip:

(d) "pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon" means a grip that
allows for a pistol style grasp in which the web of the trigger hand (between the thumb and index
finger) can be placed below the top of the exposed portion of the trigger while firing.

Hmm, could be argued that all of the hand is below the exposed portion of the trigger. It's just not exposed like a normal trigger. On the other hand, what trigger?

that's a super awkward place to stick your thumb - recoil going straight into the thumb joints doesn't look fun.

Dumb idea to a problem that doesn't really exist with proper technique. Also, I think it's a very bad idea to use the thumb. That's what you normally grip with. Opposable thumbs and all that. I can see a lot of accidental discharges with that screwy trigger.

So why someone don't build a trigger group with the trigger exposed below the web of the hand? Use the middle finger to pull.

meaning, if you had a lower trigger group, you could in theory grasp the grip lower, so that the webbing was below the exposed portion of the trigger while operating the trigger, and therefore in violation of the law

I have a pistol grip still. Just have to pull the back pin to crack it in half to be able to eject magazine to make it California legal. Damn California SMH.

Using the logic of this thread, the only thing that would work would be a pinky trigger as you can't grip below that point.

the law specifies the webbing between thumb and index finger.

Lame. And who cares if it is or is not a pistol grip. You can’t get a pistol grasp while shooting if you have to use your thumb to trigger. So it is not much different than a grip fin in that respect.

Plus trigger control will be bad. You have a good chance of shooting unintentionally when you jamb your thumb in that trigger well.

Just lame all around, IMO.

use the magazine not outside the pistol grip; I.E. the magazine is the grip. Gets at the root of the wording if my memory serves.

The trigger is even higher than a normal trigger and the hand is therefore well below the top of yhe trigger. The law says nothing about it applying onlybyo a conventional trigger design. As such, and the fact the pistol grip conspicuously protrudes, makes that design obviously illegal. There's no possible way to make it legal without converting to a fixed magazine.
