My great grandfather and grand uncle were naval officers and participated in action at and the occupation of Vera Cruz. They were abord the USS Florida at the time. I'm sure I spent some time years later as a very bored kid being shown pictures from their time on the ship. Not so well known is that President Wilson awarded 56 Medals of Honor for action at VeraCruz. It's been said his was a fairly generous display and I tend to agree with that assessment.

Does the old saying...
"We won the battles but are slowly losing the war" apply here? (And don't anyone say this was just about the oil fields, just because they were oil fields in Veracruz.) Maybe third time is a charm? |

very awesome. I'm ashamed to say I didn't know about this event, and I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about most US military history, though admittedly slanted towards those involving aviation.

I was in Puerto Vallarta a couple of weeks ago and visited the Mexican naval museum there. Needless to say they had a different take on the whole thing. It arose out of the Tampico affair in which a handful of US sailors were arrested. After they were returned we demanded a 21 gun salute as well. It might have died down at that point but an arms shipment (from US companies shipped through Germany to avoid the proscription on providing arms to Mexican revolutionaries) weas beived to be coming, hence the invasion. This is a vast over simplification. Commanding the invasion was Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher and also participating was his nephew Lieutenant Frank Jack Fletcher (of Midway fame). Both were awarded medals of honor.
