WOFT candidate here, looking for some help or advice from fellow calgunners!
Hello everyone, I'm a civilian with no prior military experience, and I'm in the process of putting a WOFT packet together. The most difficult part thus far has been even getting in contact with senior aviators for an interview and possibly a letter of recommendation from them. I'm wondering if any fellow calgunners are senior warrants or commisioned officer aviators here, or could point me in the right direction of getting in contact with one? I'm 100% willing to travel anywhere (including out of state) to get in contact. If this request is by any means inappropriate, please let me know, and I will take it down. Thank you all for your time!

No to all except me always wanting to fly. I'm a 24 year old engineer, run my family business of manufacturing aerospace parts for government contracts. I heard about the WOFT program by stumbling across it while researching military aviation, and I felt like it was the best for me to apply into. The answer is always no unless I at least give it my best shot!

You will have to take a year off from the family business. So I am not sure if you want to go active duty or was thinking of being a reserve. But even as a reserve your training is all done on active duty.
The pros/cons are flying is really awesome but you know you will a glorified taxi driver? Check out this link: http://www.rucker.army.mil/newcomers/students/ierw/ Good luck. |

National guard will not take WOFT candadites unless prior service. If you are coming from the street only active duty will take you. I also recommend you get your private pilots license. The selection board is very competitive from what I've heard.

Did you get any help on this? I know two Marine Reserve helicopter pilots (that fly civilian as well) who would be happy to talk to you and one of them has knowledge of (and possibly connections to refer you to) with Army WO helicopter pilots. PM me if you want.

Things have probably changed since I was going to join then(5 years ago). When I was trying to join the WOFT program the NG said they did not take non prior service for it.

Your best bet is to talk directly with the guard unit you are interested in, arrange a sit down meeting, let them know what you're interested in, and they can essentially slot you for a pilot seat, should you go ocs. Either way, if national guard is what you're interested in, talk to the unit first. Active duty woft, i dont believe you're required to have letters of recommendation from cw3's+ as a civillian. You just need civilian letters of recommendation. If you are already in the military, thats when you would need cw3+ letters for your woft packet. ***If you are located near Orange county/LA, come on down to Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos and have a chat, should you be interested in talking with a National Guard Flight Company.
