Default Bought my first AR! But.... Did I overpay?

I went to a local shop and I bought a Springfield Saint AR-15 for $1100.

I initially was going to go for something cheaper since it was my first AR (S&W M&P Sport for $650), but I got tempted and pushed to go for this one (not to say I don't like the rifle).

I was just curious to see if I overpaid or I was given a fair price? As I've seen similar prices online to what I paid, and then I see almost half of what I paid elsewhere....

Hell no you did not overpay, you paid what you wanted and got what you wanted when you wanted it. Could you have gotten something cheaper, maybe, but that isn't really the question.

ENjoy your rifle, shoot it often and don't worry about it. In 10 years you will wish you could find it at that price anywhere.

I custom built my AR's, I overpaid for sure but I am extremely happy with the guns that I own and they are worth every penny to me. Your rifle is worth whatever it takes to make you happy, In fact I just bought a Olight to throw on the rail just because, I'm not even sure I'll ever sue it but it was a smoking 24 hour flash sale and I couldn't turn it down. Shoot it and let it make you happy, besides you're just going to swap out every part slowly until you have enough extra parts to build a whole new rifle and start the process over, I've been there haha.

Once I find the gun I want at a price I'm willing to pay I QUIT SHOPPING, because I will inevitably see it for sale for less and be bugged by it.

Quit shopping and go shoot your new gun!
(...and welcome to the obsession!)

Congratulations OP. Donít pay much attention to whatís above. Unless you have a knowledgeable person to guide you, everyone overpays for their first firearm. Consider it a right of passage/initiation right.

The good new is youíll never be sorry for buying a better quality tool. You wonít remember the hundred bucks a year from now.

Welcome OP and congratulation!

To be fair, there are different versions in the Springfield Saint series. Saint, Freefloat, Victor, Edge...

OP, what is the version that you bought? Even if you paid a little extra, don't take it to heart and enjoy your new rifle. Make it up by finding a lot of ammo on sale.

Let me weigh in here:

First of all, the Saint is a really good choice, and more well equipped out of the box than an M&P or Ruger. I have all three, and the Saint build quality is just better all around, better furniture, better factory featureless stock, and a quality proprietary brake and rear sight. All three are great shooters.

Did you overpay?

Maybe, but take the above posts with a grain of salt. Who knows if those are actually in stock, and out of state prices are completely disingenuous because there are tons of middle man fees and hidden costs with transfers.

I can laugh now, but I tried to buy my first personal AR-15 at the worst possible time during the panics of 2008 - 2009. I bought the last factory built AR for on display for sale at a local gun show as I was on my way out. I saw it (S&W M&P 15 that pre-dated the "Sport" line.)

I was stunned at the high price, but as soon as I picked it up off the table, a guy came up behind me and had his wallet out to buy if I set it down. The FFL knew the market and was not about to haggle. I paid a small fortune for it, and I still have it, and I don't regret it.

If you felt like you were treated well in the store and they took care of you, and the firearm is what you wanted, then go forth and don't look back. A lot of people besides me took a bath on purchases during the multiple EBR panics that we've had over the last 10 years or so.

But at least you have it, enjoy it.

A couple of hundreds $ this way or that way is nothing to worry about.
Remember, you are in California where a piece of injection molded plastic GLOCK 19 goes for 1K or more. That is the same gun you can buy in most other states for 4 bills and change. You would not believe the prices most folks ( myself included) pay here for guns. It is what it is. Enjoy what you bought. The next deal maybe a better one.

No thanks to the asanine gun laws in this great state of ours.

Op,
I went in to buy my first AR back in the day, 2015. Had done the comparisons, and planned on buying the Ruger AR-556, which was on sale at Turners. Went in to the shop, asked for itóoutta stock.
Iíd already got consensus with the missus to buy, so I didnít want to come home empty handed. Went ahead and asked for the S&W M&P 15 Sport, next closest in my comparisonsóoutta stock.
Asked for next black rifle up in price, and the guy came back and said ColtLE6920. And thatís how I got my own AR.

Wasnít my first choice, wasnít on sale, was more than I budgeted, but DAMN! for my first AR, I love it!m

Congrats OP and welcome to the club! Shoot the crap outta it! Then do a few mods. Buy a new upper in diff caliber. Itís an amazing fun gun. Enjoy yours!

You got what you wanted, you like it, so don't worry about it.
Just don't buy any more ARs... well one or two more is ok.

Money is meant to be spent, get out to the range and enjoy what you worked for.

Who cares?

You decided that you were alright paying whatever for your gun, and then you paid it. It was worth that much to you. It's done. Who gives a ****? Or do you prefer having a bunch of anonymous idiots tell you you're a dumbass because they could have bought it cheaper?

i've probably overpaid for a good percentage of my guns and while i've gotten much better at researching for good prices there was a time i really didn't care - if you had it and i wanted it the deal was made

i know damn well i overpaid for my M&P Sport AR15 - yeah, bought it during the crisis, figuring they'd get banned and it cost me around $860.00, no forward assist, no dust cover model - shortly before the crisis that same AR could be had in the $500 range

bottom line, i was happy with the purchase and still having that extra $350 i spent at that time really wouldn't change my world - the purchase DID make me happy and in a way did change my world too - it opened me up to the modern rifles that were out there

be happy with your purchase, don't let the cost cloud your thoughts - now you own it, it's yours, go out an enjoy it

like someone else posted - stock up on ammo

Point being, a Hera stock and thread protector isn’t worth $500. Because that is the only difference.

And he does not have to live in a free state - these aren’t guns subject to a roster. He could have bought and shipped that to Audiophil who would have blocked the mags, converted it to featureless or broke it down to a bare receiver for transfer while shipping all the other parts to OP to make featureless as he desired. For a heck of a lot less than $500.

Price wise you did alright as long as you are happy.
But personally I wouldn't but SA AR as they are late and new to the market and I'm not a fan of some of their political moves

Does anyone else see the irony in people on Calguns — home of the Calguns Marketplace — righteously telling the OP that he overpaid for a gun that really is “in new condition” and really does have “less than 200 rounds down the pipe”?

OP, you got what you wanted at a price you could afford. You don’t have to travel for it, you don’t have to have it shipped anywhere and converted, and you don’t have to pay any FFL transfer fees. It’s California legal, and it’s BRAND NEW. Good job! Now go out and enjoy it!

The price was fair, after all the Saint line comes from the factory with a lot of upgrades that are not on cheaper guns, google reviews and you will see. depending on the model of Saint its wholesale price is from 700-850 area. thus giving the seller a reasonable markup, for having his money invested and sitting.

Pros of overpaying:
Warranty
Out of the box perfection (hopefully)
1 stop shop time saved
All set up with the features you want or required
More time shooting

Cons of overpaying:
Price
Less time learning about failures...

I have friends that try to budget build and eventually spend so much time diagnosing or re-buying parts because they don't like them or they don't work. Honestly some of my more expensive and simpler guns that "just work" are sometimes more enjoyable to shoot. Now there's nothing cooler than having an AR perform flawlessly at the range with friends instead of taking it apart and trying to figure out why it stovepiped, jammed, click and nothing, double feed, mag won't stay in or drop freely, won't cycle, won't charge... My AR had 0 issues until I started experimenting with different springs, bcgs and mags.

Great post! There have been some well used Gen4 and 5 Glocks listed for ridiculous prices lately. Also, let's not forget $400 pocket guns listed for $1200+.

The same thing can be said for Glocks too.
Put in a new barrel, slide or springs and now it wonít run reliably.

I would have to agree with this

OP,

you bought it to use, not as some sort of silly investment.
Good on you and great purchase!
