Arrow Applying for CoCo Deputy Sheriff

Hi all.
It is time that I made the decision to better myself and give back.
I'm taking the next step in my life and applying for Deputy Sheriff Recruit in CoCo following Thanksgiving.
I'm nervous, as I'm sure most were, for the poly test for the simple fact that I've never experienced something of that nature.
As far as writing, grammer, comprehension, and surprisingly physical fitness, I'm confident.

Any tips, suggestions to help prepare, or funny stories would be much appreciated.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, if you would, and I look forward to, potentially, joining your ranks.

Cheers,
Grant

Just be your self. Stay calm and be as professional as possible in any situation where you are meeting someone from the department.

When you talk to interviewers relax make eye contact and seriously just be you.

Best advice I got. I Got hired pretty quick, in a bad economy with no college degree.

Good luck man and keep us updated.

Don't get discouraged, apply everywhere you can. Hiring process is terrible, and intended to be that way.

I just got hired by my local SO (start Monday). As the guy above said, the hiring process is terrible. Stressful and makes you very anxious.

Advice:
- apply EVERYWHERE . It is very difficult to get hired right away, put in as many apps as you can and take as many tests as possible.

- be in shape. Find out what the PFT entails and make sure you can max-out on everything. It will set you apart from everyone else in the group right away. Most people aren't in good shape....try to max out.

-Polygraph- don't lie . They will find out EVERYTHING you've ever done and yes, it sucks....I was very nervous even though I had nothing to worry about.

This was my 3rd application before getting a job. I have a Bachelors degree in criminal justice, maxed out in the PFT, and my interviews went really well.....it takes time, apply everywhere.

Pm me if you have questions, I just went through it all.

Yes. Some departments will get you in from application to academy in 90 days or less. Some can take over a year or even longer with some individuals. It's tough, but stick it out.

Double check yourself on the background. Dates and locations are very important. Do not leave anything out when you get the package to fill out. Good luck.

And if you get the job, keep us in mind! you might be able to drop a bug in the sheriff's ear about the right to CCW in CoCo County!

Good luck!

Good luck. COCO academy is one of the hardest in CA. They take pride in making you miserable. My buddy made it a few months there before he failed out with an injury. He was a Marine Corps Scout Sniper and told me every day was harder than the first day of Marine Corps Basic. Have fun.

Will do. I wouldn't want to have to go back and explain something later. Better to be overly honest up front.

Sounds like a tough challenge. All I can do is give it 100 if I make it there.

Ok silly question guys, when showing up for your written, what were you wearing? I by no means want to under dress but know at that point I don't need to be suited up until the Oral etc.
Cheers

Not a silly question. Written test: long sleeve collared shirt, slacks, tie, dress shoes, etc. Basically a suit without the coat.

ALWAYS look really sharp. Clean shaven, haircut, upbeat. It helps.

Toughest part of the academy is the academics, PT isn't that bad unless you are a disgusting fat body. The memos you will write and the constant studying of LD's will take its toll, I'm sure that's why some former military find it so difficult. Army basic training was easier.

Study up on the Department itself, history and its mission statement. (Most likely on it Wed site. Also, prepare yourself to explain what special characteristics you possess that will assist the Department. And why you have chosen this agency. If you are hired they are going to spend lots of money training you, do not say something like as a stepping stone for XXX agency.

Good Luck

I've been trying to memorize their mission statement but figure a good understanding of what they are striving for would be just as good to have under my belt.

Any thing else in particular I should verse myself on before hand?

Thanks again for all of the great feedback and pointers thus far, everyone!

Not trying to incite anything. But a friend of mine injured himself in the academy, we'll he broke his jaw after the gas chamber. The academy staff rushed to the hospital to see him and they offered him a job on the spot. So do whatever works for you!

Last I heard he's working patrol now.

I heard was that when he was inside the gas chamber his buddy was supposed to guide him out of there like a battle buddy. I guess they both staggered out he felt dizzy and fell on top of a rock outside the door and had a seiziré, broke his jaw. It was a mess.

So they came to visit him in the hospital and offered him a job on the spot. He was given another chance to go to the next Academy class.

My wait was over 2 months without hearing a word after i did my oral board. And we had a small amount of applicants compared to CA.

COCO is fast, I got my results in less than 2 weeks. As of right now, I'm waiting for a BI to contact me for an interview. Good luck in your process

Don't worry about the range, gym is more important. Think crossfit not heavy weights. Run 3 miles comfortably.

CoCo County! Hey guys, I've been lurking around on these forums for awhile but just got around to registering because of this thread.

I'm looking into applying for CoCo county sheriff in the future, just wondering on how the Mrs. or significant other handled/is handling the idea of applying. Any tips or pointers on how to ease them into the idea?

I don't think there is much you can say to ease their mind on the idea of you becoming a law enforcement officer. My dad, a firefighter is all for the idea of me becoming a cop but on the other hand my mom is seriously concerned and worried about the whole thing. My girlfriend feels the same way as my mom.

For CoCo County Sheriffs, you can say you will be working the jails for a couple years and its relatively safe compared to out patrolling the streets immediately. Hopefully by the time you are a deputy working the jail, your family and your significant other can possibly ease up by then and accept the fact that this is what you want to do.

Maybe a veteran LEO can chime in and can give us some advice.

From my experience which so far is only testing, make sure to sit down and talk about how time consuming the process is. It takes a lot out of you, hopefully the saying you get out what you put in runs true! If you ain't married you may turn up single or like me have an upset significant other that you don't have as much free time anymore.

I'm single recently and that's when I made my move.
Time to do for me what I know is right besides trying to make someone else happy and holding myself back.

The feeling the the jail is "safer" than the street is an error in judgement and mindset. The threats are the same, the people are the same, the surroundings are different. If you need to sell it to your family that way, okay, but make sure your head is on straight before you hit academy/FTO.
