"Saturday Night Special" and bonus story...
Shot this old .22 short revolver that my wife's grandmother gave to us years ago. At the time she told us that it belonged to my wife's great grandfather. I cleaned it up and shot it a few times and then it sat in the safe for the past 10+ years.
Google fu says the revolver is from Gerstenberger & Eberwein manufactured in Gussenstadt, West Germany and it's at least 50 years old. It shot consistently about 20 times single shot without a prob...I then shot a few times double action and it started getting light strikes so I put it away. Prolly needs another good cleaning, and I bet a new/strong spring would do it good. At any rate, sharing pix and the first shots on target at 15 yards Oh, and bonus story....out of nowhere, a hot shell hit the ground and started a fire of the pile of old shells!!! Freakin' crazy....when it started, it was as if someone lit a smoke bomb....really thick yellow smoke, and then the circle grew and flames became visible Good thing we had a couple bottle waters near by until the RO got there with the extinguisher. Anyways....my 2nd range fire in decades of shooting...just never know, be safe Last edited by coy80176; 06-14-2014 at 1:33 PM.. |

Cool story.
As a side note RE fires…When I go shooting in the great outdoors, I include a shovel and a 2 gallon weed sprayer full of water in my load out. I just can't afford to be "that guy" who burned down the forest! |

Would be interesting to see what it takes to make the gun function well. Nice "hand me down" either way. I supposed to get an early Mossberg pump .22 soon, hex barrel. Don't start anymore fires...

Safety first for sure...
I always have a fire extinguisher in the trunk, but its always better to have your JIC plan at your side.

Stay tuned...

For the record, I had only shot the 22 when the smoke started so I had brass in hand. The guys to my right had a .40 semi auto pistol and were shooting rounds from the range.... Nothing super hot or tracers . ...never know |

I'm guessing
a hot brass was enough to start burning left over gun powder and/or dust.
As I said, it started as if it were a smoke bomb....just one spot with a small column of thick yellow smoke coming from it. As the circle of what was on fire grew, you could see the discoloration of the spent shells going from "old shells" color to "ash/burnt" white-ish color. No one was smoking cigarettes, no one shot the ground right there, not sure what else could have started it. Crazy. |
