With the post Nordyke gathering filling up I figure those of us in Denver on the 19th shouldn't let them be the only ones having fun after the arguments. Even if every one of us goes its still just a small handful so there's no need for anything elaborate. So who's up for some drinks or something?

I've got to make an international flight that evening, but I'm sure we'll all have a drink or something after the argument in Denver.

If I could have a rough number of people there, I might be able to set something up for you.

Time?
No. of people?
accommodations?

I'll leave the time estimate to somebody with a better idea of how long arguments will run. As for people, I'll be there with a plus one.

It's going to be like 7 people counting all the lawyers. I think we'll just ad-hoc it but thanks for the offer.

That's what I was thinking. You can't throw a rock from the courthouse steps without hitting a restaurant or bar that would work perfectly for our size of party. (In fact we could go ahead and do that to decide where to go at the last minute .) I just wanted to be sure everyone would be joining in.

I'll check around the day before the hearing and see if there's anyplace appropriate.

Some suggestions from my amigo...

Quote:
Since this is a shooting gig, I assume beer drinkers will be in attendance. So I suggest Ghost Plate & Tap -- http://ghostdenver.com/ -- for post-argument libations. It is a Breckenridge/Wynkoop Brewery place, but has lots of guest taps from other local breweries as well, plus pretty good bar food, and is right around the corner from the Tenth Circuit courthouse.

We also frequent the Ice House Tavern in Lower Downtown -- http://www.icehouselodo.com/ (pulled pork nachos, yum), and the Breckenridge Brewery by Coors Field -- http://www.breckbrew.com/food/brecke...-ball-park-pub (the Missus and I go there just about every Sunday afternoon to drink beer and read the paper). Also in LoDo, across from the Ice House, is the original Denver brew pub, http://wynkoop.com/, started by our Gov. It has a great atmosphere in a classic loft building, but the food is meh. The beer got better when they combined with Breck.

A friend of mine in Denver suggested "The Corner Office" due to their happy hour. JD, what does your friend say about that?

Gray, I'm sorry to say that I won't be able to be there.

Had some people quit at work and all vacations were canceled until we replace the sales staff. sigh.

ETA: See follow-up post.

His response...

Quote:
The Corner Office is a pretty decent place. We like the food and it has a fairly eclectic menu, so just about anyone can find something good. Good atmosphere, with two caveats. It is attached to the Curtis Hotel, so it can have a hotely vibe in the bar sometimes -- think an occasional drunken salesman or three. No big deal and not always, but.... It is also right across the street from the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, where we have the opera, ballet, symphony, plays, etc. As a result, the bar gets crowded fast immediately before and after shows and service suffers (that's often when we go, so it must not be too bad).

I'll be in Denver Friday morning through Monday night.

I'm staying at the Curtis which is attached to The Corner Office so I'll try to get a first hand review of their martini bar by late Friday.

I'm at the Monaco and we'll all be gathering Sunday evening for dinner and then adult libations into the evening. If one is in Denver, reach out to Gray or I to find out where we've ended up Sunday evening.

I was going, had my reservation, hotel and everything, but things sort of fell apart and I couldn't go. Nordyke it is though...

If Peterson goes to SCOTUS, it's SCOTUS for sure.

Bummer. You were missed last night. Nordyke should be a good time though.

I've been reading the posts of an incisive writer at mdshooters.com, jpk1md.

Jpk asks a very simple question: Where does the U.S. Constitution give the U.S. government the authority to force a state to accept another state's handgun permit? After all, the state-to-state acceptance of drivers licenses was accomplished by agreement of the states, not by federal imposition.

As clearly no such authority is granted, the relief sought in this case appears to usurp the 10th Amendment. It appears far more likely that the U.S. court will overturn Denver's ban on open carry than it will be to compel Colorado to accept foreign permits.

The latter outcome would be welcome, but we have to guard against activist judges and the erosion of state's rights in the presence of an activist bench. While we may agree with what an activist judge may do to our state, today, once that monster is unleashed, we may not agree with the loss of our state sovereignty, tomorrow.

A win here will compel CO to provide an avenue through which non-residents may legally carry. It's up to CO to decide how to do that. If they don't want to accept Gray's out of state permit, they have to allow him to apply for a Colorado permit.

But the courts have said, again and again, including in Heller, that there's no right under the Second Amendment to carry a concealed weapon.

Then open carry. I believe Grays case is based on carry more than how to carry. Gray knows the states can choose under current regs.

Goldrush and jpk1md have a lot in common based on their posting style. Apparently neither one can accept the validity of the Full Faith and Credit clause, either.

Once a state ventures in to denying fundamental rights, it steps well beyond the threshold of state's rights. Consider how well it worked for the late Governor Wallace of Alabama.

If a state were deciding from which states synagogues or churches import hire pastors or rabbis to speak, or denying speaking rights to non-residents, it would absolutely fall in the federal government purview.

Imagine if a state legislature passed a law which said 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights don't apply to non-residents. Would THAT be the business of the federal government? How, then is 2nd amendment infringement a state's rights issue?

The Second Amendment is the one right that is so fundamental that the inability to exercise it, should the need arise, would render all other rights null and void. Dead people have no rights.

I don't see the word concealed anywhere in my post.
