Die question

I still haven't ordered my dies yet, but have a question before I do. I have once fired brass from my own rifle that I will be loading for and was going to get this die set http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shoot...3Bcat104516280

But was reading that if the brass is fired from my rifle I should use a neck sizer die like this http://www.midwayusa.com/product/555...308-winchester

so should I get the first die set and teh neck sizer separate or just full length size them and trim them?

If you use a neck sizing die for your brass, sooner or later, you will need to full length size them. your rifle will let you know when it starts to be difficult to chamber.

You need both.

Get the lee deluxe die set. For bolt action all you need is the neck sizer, but as Abenaki has mentioned you will eventually need the full length sizer. All in all you don't need the factory crimp die in the pacesetter set.

I run the Redding deluxe set and a Lee collet die on my bolt guns. No crimp either. A lot if rifle bullets don't evn have a cannelure. I do tend to crimp range fodder for my AR.

Yes and you don't NEED a powder through die unless your using a powder dispensing device like the lee auto disk powder measure or lee's perfect powder measure.

What press are you using btw?

I'm using a lee turret press that has the auto disk measure

Be careful of the neck only sizing. At some point, your brass will not want to chamber and you can get a loaded case stuck that will not chamber properly and will be very difficult to get out of your chamber. I've had several occasions over the years where I had to beat on the bolt handle with a piece of wood.

I neck only (N/O )no more than about 3-4 times, then F/L size. If you're going to N/O size, keep exact track of how many times the brass has been N/O sized. If you don't, you will eventually get a stuck case. I even had this happen recently when I did keep track and somehow one case decided to stick and I was beating on the bolt handle to get it out.

I have a friend this happened to in his 700V in .223 Remington. The N/O loaded round stuck so bad in the chamber,he tried to extract it and tore the rim off of the case. He had to take the Rifle with a loaded round in the chamber to a Gun Smith who had to take the barrel off of the action and then carefully remove the loaded round. It was expensive to do. Lesson learned, he never N/O sized again.

Keeping track of how many N/O sizings will help to avoid this.

NEVER N/O size for an autoloader, pump or lever action. N/O in bolt guns or Single shot guns.

I would buy the Lee deluxe 3 die kit with the Collet die (N/O) and the F/L die.

I didn't mean to scare you off about N/O sizing, but you do need to be aware of the issues. I do use the Lee N/O Collet die. The collet die makes some very accurate ammo. I use the Collet die with a Redding F/L "Body Die".

Just be sure you N/O cases no more than 3X and you should be fine. If I'm reloading for Hunting ammunition to be used in the field away from civilization, I always F/L size the cases.

Be sure to set up your F/L die properly in the press to bump your fired cases only .001"-.002" back so you don't over work your brass.

Lee now sells the "Ultimate Die Set" for guys in your situation. It has the full length sizing die, neck only collet die, factory crimp die and bullet seating die all in one set.
