Check used racks at gun shops and pawn shops for Marlin 60 or, if you want bolt action, 881. Both tube fed, accurate, durable guns. I have one of each, bought at LGS for $125 or less plus DROS. Both are more accurate than a stock 10/22 carbine. The older ones seem to have better fit and finish than the new ones, and are commonly available used.

There are numerous 22LR rifles in your price range from Savage, Marlin, Winchester, Remington, Rossi, Mossberg, and Ruger (during 10/22 sales).

My suggestion is to pay more for a takedown model, such as the Marlin Papoose, Ruger 10/22 takedown, and the new Savage 64 takedown — this one should be priced close to $200 retail when avail.

The 10/22 has great accessories and backpacker stocks that make it even more compact. Henry AR7 is very compact but accuracy is inferior to 10/22.

Takedown rifles allow you to carry them without attracting too much attention. They also sit nicely (in carry bags) between rows of rifles in your safe.

If compact carry doesn’t appeal to you, wait for Black Friday sales on Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 60.

Or get a $40 guitar case which can fit any rifle or shot gun.

Really can’t go wrong with this. Put a cheap $40 3x9 Simmons optic on it and shoot quarter sized groups at 50 all day long. Reliable with cheap ammo, extra mags are readily available and inexpensive. Just plain works and a small package to boot.

I like my Marlin 795 with tech sights. With rebate a few years back rifle was $100.00. Good out of the box.

This is a great choice. A solid shooter, well made and no mags to worry about. The Marlin 60 is my favorite semi auto rimfire.

not a .22 but a 17 hmr. scoped heavy barrel bolt action. i can hit shotgun hulls (emty) all day long at 100 + yards, so a good .22 should do the same.
yes bench rest, as my eyes are not so good.
not meant as a carry around, just a range pinker.
sad around here any new 10-22 is going for three bills + taxes.
and yes get the Henry ar 22 take down survival rifle. and get extra mags. great back pack, under the seat rifle,

Yup, my first thought. Also the Henry AR7 is right around $200-$250

There's a 1000+ post thread on the Marlin 795 that's stickied on the top. Either a lot of people like it or there's 1 seriously chatty individual.

I just bought a Hatsan Escort 22LR online and paid just a hair over $200 including taxes and DROS.
I haven't shot it yet, but I received several compliments on the firearm when signing paperwork.

Buy a used Ruger 10-22 - the older the better. New ones have cast metal parts, plastic trigger housings, plastic barrel band and butt plate, synthetic or cheap wood stock, painted not anodized receiver, poor fit/finish.

I thought the days of $120 10/22's were gone, but my buddy got a stainless 10/22 at Turner's Grand Opening for $99.

How that helps OP, I dunno. Get your camping gear and go to all the Turner's openings?

Yeah, 10/22 does seem like the way to go though... don't they go for $199 or less everywhere? Cabela's has them for $229, so someone must sell 'em under $200.

Yeah that Turner's deal was them losing money I imagine. Buddy waited a couple hours. But $229 with 20% off gift cards would be $185 or so. Cabelas's or Bass Pro. My $129 10/22 cost way more after replacing all the Ruger parts anyway.

Anyone have a Savage A22? Any good?

Sounds like it might be worth a shot for $100, takes Mossberg mags.

I mean, what if you could buy a rifle for $100 and NOT put another $400 into it just because. I'm all for that in a budget .22. If it has a decent barrel, decent trigger, light weight... why not.

Very interesting! Thanks for the vid. If I need another .22 rifle, I'll give it a go.

Why? What do you want to do? For a sample of the market, Go out to Sportsman’s Warehouse and search for rifles/.22LR/Sort low to high cost. You’ll get three pages. The first page and a half takes you under $200. The next takes you to $300 with some really good guns (CZ 455 bolt; Henry lever). (Narrow it from there (Pink Camo?). Do the same for Cabelas or Bass Pro., etc. Think about how you want to shoot (single shot; bolt action; semi-auto; lever) and how you want to load (box magazine, tube from the front, etc.) Think about the future; buy once/cry once or buy now and later. Then, ask opinions on some that interest you and shop for them.

Best.

If you want a bolt there are multiple options. I picked up a Ruger American .22lr for just under 200 on sale last xmas that's been great.

Post if you get one.

Sounds like a good one. Four pounds, 18.5" barrel, recessed crown, free floated, good accuracy, etc... I might get one. You can use the 25 round plinker mags, but the included ones should be just fine.

Unfortunately, I have .22 rifles coming out my ears. So it likely won't happen anytime soon.
