Default New to Precision Rifle....

My background in 5+ years of USPSA pistol, 4 years of Multigun and UML. I've shot MG stages out to 450 yds with good success, mostly prone with foreguard support on barrier, sometimes bipod, some basic barrier shooting.

So....my setup is a RPR 6.5, PST Gen 2 5-25, Atlas bipod. Barrel is just broken in. Was going to just stick with Hornady ELD Match for awhile, but wonderful California makes this a hard find. No problem, I've got Lapua Brass, H4350 and Berger AR 130 Hybrids. On Friday, going to ladder test rounds out to 300yds(max distance at my range). Back on Saturday to Proof the winning load out to 300yds. I expect my load will be in the 41.5 to 43 grain range at @2900 fps, but being a fairly experienced loader, I want to work towards this from the bottom. Have a LabRadar for easy range chrono setup.

My goal is to be in Bakersfield Sunday morning for their club match if all goes well. I have backpack, bags, Shooter Ap, Wrist Coach, Kestrel, Rangefinder, kneepads, elbow pads. I have all the gear, but need the experience. My MG background should help to make the transition easier, and I'm sure I will get as much help as I need on a squad. That's what is great about the shooting sports.

Am I realistic in thinking I can take my range data, dial it in, and be in the ballpark at 600+? Obviously, I will need some help watching for hits to see what adjustments to make on the fly. Help with wind too!

My expectations are to get experience and have fun!

I just got into long range shooting myself and did my first f class match last month at 600. I was able to get on at 600 without much issue once I stopped being an idiot and realized i dialed my dope in the scope the wrong way..( took 4 shots to realize this, yes im an idiot.) Once i put in my dope properly I was on paper the first shot and only had to make a slight adjustment. This was with factory ammo since I didnt have my reloading stuff for 6.5 creedmoor at the time.

So yes you should be fine, i just used a ballistics calculator and that got me on paper and made my final adjustments. Its fun though, id definately recommend doing a match. Going to do my first 1000yd match this month and I got my reloads now so Im excited.

ELD-X is hunting ammo. No surprise you can't find it where lead hunting ammo is banned.

ELD bullets have been easy for me to find, but anyways...

As long as you have good data with the Labradar and you true your ballistics app you will be dialed. What app are you using ?

Default Ballistic App

I've been using Shooter for Multigun and basic range work and will probably stick with that for now. It's fast and easy, and I know the app.

I did find a source for ELD Match 140's, but I'd really rather do a quick load workup and ladder test to see what the rifle likes. If I just get crunched for time I'll shoot factory ammo.

Spent the evening trying out some new bags, and going through reticle practice. Need a bit of work to be quick with MRads coming from a MOA world. Printed a couple of cheat sheets for an arm board to help. Want to be prepared to use holdovers when there isn't time to spin turrets. Wind will truly be the deep end of the pool!

I have taken shooter from 100 yard zero to a mile, with no issues having 1st round hits.

Just think in thirds rather than 4ths. That's what I do in my head using Mil or MOA

2900FPS was pretty aggressive load for my Gen1 6.5 CM RPR. It grouped best at 2704FPS with the 140ELDs, 41.7g H4350 and small primer Starline brass.

BTW, if looking for another place to shoot long range precision rifle type matches, the Avenal Range runs one monthly.

Great accuracy with my Gen 2 RPR.

.5 to.75 groups at 100. Still need to get a grouping at 200 but can ring 600 all day at Angeles

2750 fps
140 GR ELDMs
41.5 H4350
Hornady Brass
CCI LRP
.03 off the lands

Default yes...

Agreed, pushing 140's above 2700 is pointless from what data I've collected.
I'm going to work the Berger 130 up to 2900 fps, not the 140 ELD

I did find the Avenal matches, and that they run the NRL22 match too. My Xmas present to myself was a Ruger Precision 22. Has a Vortex Diamondback Tactical.

My push for getting a day in at Bakersfield is that next month they will be hosting the California Sharpshooter Showdown, and PRS style 2 day match.

Hopefully my long range work with 3Gun will help, but that is all BDC reticle and holdovers, and wind out to 400 hasn't been too tough. Pretty much shoot, see and adjust. Spend 30 minutes last night just running the bolt and staying solid on the gun and dialing turrets and and thinking quick holdovers.
Not sure if running complicated stages in USPSA and MG is harder, or managing ballistics. I'm sure managing ballistics will be a challenge in the beginning. This should be fun!

let us know how the Bergers work out. i was not able to find an accurate load with it using H4350, Varget or H4895. Interestingly found that the Nosler RDF 140s didn't work as good as the ELDs but they did work better than the Bergers....

Default well...

That's interesting about the 130 Bergers.... I have 140 ELDs too, but only time to work up one load in the short time frame.

There is a full MIL of elevation difference at 1K in the 140 ELD-M's between 2700 and 2880 fps, and a couple tenths in wind hold. A friend gave me a box of factory 140 ELD-M to try alongside of my handloads. Factory went 2700, my handloads went 2880. BIG difference in performance. Granted, I was at the extreme ragged leading edge of performance at 2880.

Here's what I got in JBM which is very close to what I got live:

140 ELD-M 2700 vs 2880 fps.jpg

As for the difference between MOA and MIL, just keep in mind your reticle is a ruler - it doesn't matter what the increments are measured in - spot your shot, measure the required adjustment with your reticle, make the adjustment on your next shot.

If I can swing it, I'm trying to make it to Bakersfield too. Looks like a good time.

Those look right on the money. Yikes, that's pretty fast for 140's!
Taking my Berger 130's out this afternoon to do a fast load workup. Looking for 2880-2900 fps. H4350 41gr to 43.8gr. I know it's going to take 43+ gr to get there, but I'm still going to work from the bottom. Who knows, I might find a node the gun likes down low! I also have factory 140 ELD-M loads to fall back on.
What was your load?

Yeah, 2880 out of a 140 is moving right along. My new barrel (a different manufacturer than what I normally use) reached max pressure WAY earlier, so I had to do three rounds of progressively lower load development before I found one that the barrel liked really well that wasn't giving me pressure signs. Right now I'm at 40.4g H4350 and it's only at 2745 fps, but it's shooting in the .3's so I'm happy. Never going to use this manufacturer again. Going back to what I know works after this one is toast at the end of this season.
