Default Shooting Trip - National Forest?

2 of my buddies and I are Looking for people that would be interested in a trip to go up to Stanislaus National Forest for some fun, open target shooting, just for the day. (As I can't stand ranges.)
But Because it's a bit far, were going to stay up there at a casino or hotel, just a couple miles south of the Stanislaus. Anyone is free to stay or just can come for the shooting for the day.

Im in my 20's, based in SF, own a shotgun and semi-rifle. Im not a skilled shooter or anything, mainly just looking to do fun target shooting (Fruit, Soda Cans, Bricks etc...). Though I do hope to try long range rifle target shooting sometime if anyone has a .308, etc.

Don't know if anyone out there possibly interested?

Sounds fun I might be able to join in. I'm 39, based in the east bay. I own 2 12ga, 2 glocks, 1 AR. No .308, sorry. My schedule can be an obstacle however- I have my kid every other week so it just depends.

I'd be interested as well. Former Infantry Marine with tons of experience, range and tactical shooting.

My only day that will allow me would be Sundays.

What are the dates?

Not sure, I'd guess there are many off road trails one could take. I was going for one that is not to bumpy off highway 108 so it's accessible by car.

Do you have a 4 wheeler or something?

Is there a specific spot you're allowed to shoot? How's it all work? I'm looking on the park's website but I don't see anything specific to target shooting.

I'm also in SF, might be interested.

Almost any remote area (except wilderness/refuges areas) in national Forrest land you can target shoot as long as you follow the common sense laws, (150 yards from of any building, not shooting across roads, on campgrounds, etc...) I of course go much farther out than 150 yards. When I first started going shooing in national Forrests, Id call all different depts and offices to make sure its legal, & its never been an issue.....

Found a forest service impromptu "range" near the Black Oaks Indian Casino. Heading East up 108, you turn right on Toulomne Rd (opposite Twain Harte exit) for seven miles then turn left instead of right into the casino. Then take the first left (less than 1/2 mile) and drive for about 5+ miles, or so. After crossing over a cattle grate in the road, take the gravel road on the left and go about a mile uphill and the "range" will be easily recognized on your left. Great berm, targets etc.... US Forest Service gave me the directions.

34/m/Modesto......lol

Sounds cool, Id be interested If I could make it. No long range guns, yet but I have a couple Mosin's and a Mauser that can reach out pretty far. I have a Mercury Sable and a lowered Mustang so I am kind of limited on trail access.

Sorry to butt in on this, but I'm a Sonora local and the Forest Service's website says that target shooting in the forest is prohibited unless you are legally hunting for game. I've shot many times up there in the past, and know tons of people who still do...

Does the forest service/sheriff's office just ignore this?

Can you link to that page?

EDIT:

"Shooting
Discharging a firearm, air rifle, or gas gun except for the taking of wildlife as permitted by State game laws, is prohibited to minimize the intrusion of human-caused noise and to prevent damage to natural features."

Lame.

But there's also this:

"According to the Code of Federal Regulations (title 36), recreational shooting can take place on the National Forests and Grasslands, as long as:
1. You are at least 150 yards from a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation area or occupied area.
2. You are not shooting across or on a National Forest System Road or adjacent body of water.
3. You are not shooting in any manner or place where any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge.
4. You are not firing any tracer bullet or incendiary ammunition.

And this:

"You can target shoot on national forest lands unless a specific area has been closed to the activity because it jeopardizes public safety."

So basically, federal law says target shooting is ok. But locales can close an area to shooting if if "jeopardizes public safety." But the reason this particular forest service gives for prohibiting shooting is not due to safety, but due to noise and "damage to natural features."

Oh No, Sorry I forgot about that. That threw me off in the past also. That is only for Wilderness Areas. There are select areas called "Wilderness" that you can not target shoot at. Stanislaus has 3: Emigrant, Mokelumne, & Carson-Iceberg. They are much farther north. There are also select people-areas they close off for noise, like Candy Rock Quarry. Which is why I go far out. There's still thousands of open acres for target shooting in national forrest that is allowed.

But yeah, you do need to be careful to check the area of the national Forrest first to make sure its not a wilderness or refugee, majority is not.

"Recreational shooting has been a longtime use of National Forests." "Much of the National Forests is open to recreational target shooting. "

I am also a "local" to the area and you can indeed shoot where I posted, as it is NOT a WILDERNESS AREA. I got the damn information from the US FOREST SERVICE RANGERS OFFICE in Miwok Village, so if you don't know what you're talking about, please refrain from commenting and spreading FUD. I am a LEO and would not violate any laws, state, or federal. The area is a well-known shooting area.

ErikExaminer, thanks for clearing things up. I guess SNF's website had me confused (kind of skimped over the "wilderness" text). It's been a while since I've lived out here in the Sierras.

Have a great trip!

Sounds fun. Have a few rifles and pistols and a friend that might be interested (Both mid 20s). Are you trying to limit the amount of people or could we tag along?

^ Okay great, yeah Im still planning to go probably in April 4-5th, or the 3rd week of april.
Not sure about rides, Is everyone driving themselves I guess? I'm going in my friends car (a 2 seater).

I'd prefer not a bunch of people, but I dont think that'll be an issue, as most of the people on this thread I messaged a while back had not responded or said they can't make it those dates.

Your intent to shoot garbage is why a lot of frequent BLM shooters do not share remote shooting locations. Lets realistic here, your not gonna clean up all of the blown up bricks, sharp soda cans and slimy fruit pieces. Please consider bringing more manageable targets such a Steel Targets. A lot more enjoyable and clean up easy. If you do make it out there, please respect the land and leave the place cleaner than you came.

Happy Shooting

Just outta curiosity, if something's a biodegradable target such as fruit or vegetables and such, and you shoot it to pieces and leave it there, is that considered littering? (Not trying to jump on anyone or start any fights here, I honestly just don't know.)

Yes, even if its considered "Biodegradable." This also goes out to Sporting Clays as well.

And I quote a BLM officer I met a few years back, "Would you want blown up spoiled pumpkins and melons on your driveway?"

I'd be interested in going depending if its Sunday or Saturday you go?

...Mobbology, your post had no contribution or relevance to this thread. If you dont like the morality of people leaving chunks of watermelon out in the middle of nowhere, that's your issue. It's fruit pieces in a forest.....gone and degraded in 2 days. Rest of trash, Im sure majority is easily picked up.

Then your second post referred to spoiled pumpkin on your driveway? huh? They're not shooting on people's driveway, terrible comparison. And I didn't read anyone here asking for remote shooting locations, there's thousands of acres to use anyways.

My intent in my post is to educate on the out of towners on bringing cleaner and more enjoyable shooting targets rather that leaving a mess behind. I live locally to a BLM and yes its my issue when you bring that mentality to the shooting places that I frequent. Its practically my backyard. Within those 2 days you left behind the blasted fruit that you didn't care about, 2 other responsible shooters will come in and be disgusted of your actions, but will pick up after your mess anyways. Fact of the matter is, its littering. Don't like my comparison because these places is like my backyard, then let me take my pack of dogs and crap on your lawn and don't pick it up. Don't worry it will break down in 2 days anyways.

Be responsible shooter, not an asshat litterer.

I would like to come out, if this happened on the second weekend in April. The only thing is I am kind of an antique compared to the rest that have responded... 50 yrs old.

I don't much care for ranges. I love shooting in the forest (and cleaning up afterwards). There is just something tranquil about shooting in the forest for me...

Hey all, the Stan is my back yard and I love seeing people enjoying shooting, I also second or third the concern to clean up after yourselves. I don't really care about the food stuffs but bricks, and left over garbage and especially glass targets boil my blood.
As a positive suggestion, I save all my plastic milk jugs, creamer bottles etc. fill them with water before you leave, they are very reactive and usually a one piece pick up to clean up, worst is you have to look for the cap that goes way up! bring one plastic garbage bag to bring your empty blown up plastic bottles back out with ya, tons of fun! there are roads all over the place in the Forrest and getting there is half the fun. PS feel free to leave your brass as long as you let me know where your shooting and I'll come pick up the brass for you
My motto is take out more than I came with but if everyone respects our lands it won't be needed.

I didnt really want to engage in that discussion,..... but I will say I never shoot glass, as Im aware its against the rules. I had friends try to and I had to stop them. I also religiously bring trash brags and gloves with me to pick up afterwards.

I'm usually busy on Saturdays, so I'd either drive up in the evening on Saturday and stay at a hotel or just drive early on Sunday.

Please pick up your litter and brass scatter.

And yes, that includes "biodegradables".

If it's not native to the forest, don't leave it in the forest. Orange peels, banana peels, etc, etc, etc. Plan ahead not only for a day of fun, but for easy clean up afterwards. I like the idea of those hi-viz steel jumping targets.
