Default California Science Center

I searched for feedback on carrying at the CA Science Center, but the thread was really old. Anybody have info i.e. are they wanding, using metal detectors, searches...? I'm going there in a few weeks. Thanks.

Since you've already committed to going, if they deny you entry with your CCW just walk back to the car and lock it up. Seems so simple....

I went to a concert in Vegas several months ago (just prior to the Mandalay Bay incident) at the Trop and I was carrying and I saw them doing a search by the entry doors... poking through purses and such. I decided to walk my piece back to the car, man it must have been a half mile round trip! I get back to the doors and they just let me right in, no wand or anything. When I was getting seated I notice the clips on a guy's crossbreed holster right in front of me. Boy did I ever feel stupid.

I have no idea what they were looking in purses and bags for??? Probably outside alcohol I suppose.

When I do bag serches, I tell them I'm looking for "Simple hand weapons: knives, spears, grenades ..."

(Very old Kingston Trio on-stage joke.)

Kingston Trio... did they carry? You're dating yourself my man!

Seriously I can't imagine what the Trop security was looking for if it wasn't drugs or booze, because like I said they didn't wand me or obviously the guy seated in front of me, go figure. I just decided from then on to just carry if it's legal to do so and let the chips fall unless they are doing an extensive metal search.

Just got back from CA Science Center. No wanding, no metal detectors, just walked in the door and started enjoying the exhibits. Nice place, but the neighborhood is a super s***hole. And they only have paper straws for drinks, so there's that.

They aren't homeless... they live in the food court

My main concern with the CSC is whether or not parts of it or the parking areas are on USC property.
SB707 took away our exemption for carrying on campus and made it a felony, but unlike K-12 schools, the property perimeter of colleges and universities are not as clear, and in some cases may encompass areas that would normally be considered to be public roadways.

It would be the same as issues carrying at UCIMC, Loma Linda hospital, CountyUSC, etc....

Concealed carry is good to go. Wife and I went a few weeks ago and had no issues. No metal detectors, no signs and no wanding or bag checks.

By aware that USC starts on the other side of Exposition Blvd....

If anyone is interested, this is the email I had sent to them on 6/21/18:

Hello, what is your policy towards lawful concealed carry? Do you allow lawful permit holders to carry concealed on your property?
As you may or may not be aware, to obtain a permit, an applicant must pass several levels of background checks, attend 16+ hours of training, and also pass a qualification test at the firearms range. In many cases, the county Sheriff reviews and signs the permit personally. Renewals are conducted every two years, which include a fresh background check another range qualification. As you can imagine, it is easier to be disqualified for a permit than to receive one. As a result, the report “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States 2016” published by the Crime Prevention Research Center determined that “Indeed, it is impossible to think of any other group in the U.S. that is anywhere near as law-abiding.”
Thank you for your attention. The CCW community is happy to patronize businesses that are friendly to this group. I will be happy to pass along your answer to multiple concealed carry newsgroups.
-----------------------------------------

And this is the reply I received today from Sergeant Pizzi, Exposition Park Unit – California Highway Patrol:

The policy of the California Science Center is to comply with California law in allowing those lawfully permitted to carry concealed weapons to do so while visiting.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

More often, it does.

All too often, the result of such an inquiry is the creation of a formal policy and posting of signs prohibiting carry. This is extremely common when a well-meaning person inquires of a private business.

Seriously... if there are no signs posted, no metal detectors, and it is not specifically prohibited by state law or your IA's policy, it is best to remain silent and remember that concealed means concealed.

Any recent visits? Any updates? I would rather go informed, rather than experience can awkward moment at the door.

I went today. You can easily enter the main building, but when you enter the parking area, there is a sigb that says “ no guns in exposition park”. If it’s concealed, who will know? Just an FYI, the sign is there.
