Default Chabot refugees

How have the crowds been at the Livermore and Richmond ranges since Chabot closed?

Been wondering that myself ... now that I'm without a range or gun club.

Last Wednesday, there was at least 5 people waiting for the 100 yard benches the whole time I was at the San Leandro range.

Now that I'm rangeless I'm gonna have to find out the answer to that question myself. Richmond or Livermore seems equally far to me but for rifle I have no other real options. San Leandro is fine for pistol but its not great for long guns esp. with the "no fmj" signs.

Why no FMJ? Proximity to Oakland airport landing path?

No FMJ? I never heard anything about that.

On their web site:

11. Ammunition not allowed
Tracer ammo
All Pistol ammunition over 454 Casull. (454 Must be lead only)
.50 caliber or above except for Black powder firearms
Magnums other than .22 on inside range
Wolf ammo (steel core) on inside range
No .22 rimfire ammo on the 100 yd range

That sure seems to me like FMJ is allowed. I was shooting magnetic FMJ with no issues.

San Leandro has been allowing FMJ for over a year now. This is a non-issue now.

I was shooting FMJ just 2 weeks ago at San Leandro. No issues. I know for outside they allow steel case, but not sure about indoor.

I actually bailed on Chabot, even though I had a membership, when they really inflated the cost per round for trap. As a shotgun only shooter, I've been quite happy with Martinez.

Ok, I haven't been there in a bit so my info was out of date. I'm glad FMJ is ok now, I'll have to give it another go.
I never bothered to shoot anything but handguns and rimfire at SL in the past due to their old rule.

Thank you all for setting me straight.

People are flocking to Richmond.. with the requisite wait on weekends.. We try to accommodate people but it's just non-stop people waiting for a bench. Members are complaining at this point.. it's tough with only 14 positions.

Pistol line is filling up also.. Trap/Skeet not so much due to ammo restriction.. having trouble finding reliable volunteers to run that range..

Livermore couple of weeks ago have to ask the first set of shooters to pack & leave around 1230, so folks waiting can have a chance.
With cease fire in between, that is like 1hr 50min shooting.

Between San Leandro, Richmond, and Livermore which one is the best bet if I want to get about two hours of range time (100yds) on the weekend? Should I not even bother and drive to one of the South Bay ranges?

I'd scratch San Leandro as it only has a few benches at 100 (5 i think).

Richmond has about 12 I think. I went to Richmond on a Friday earlier this year and even then the rifle is full with 30 min to 1 hr waits.

At Richmond, it tends to be a little less busy when the weather is bad.. so if you can deal with wet targets, that might be the time to get out there. We have 12 bench positions and 2 or 3 positions for prone/off hand.

Right. This wait we're enduring of over one year is unreal.
They must really not need the public range or it's income.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch (USI Trap\Skeet fields) everyday
is a good day for some that only shoot clay.

Is there any chance or hope of USI @ Concord to come back for handgun/rifles?

That was one of my favorite ranges.

With Chabot now gone, Livermore, SJ Metcalf, and even GFOS's indoor range are all insanely crowded (even on a weekday)

Can't wait til USI opens up. I live 15minutes from Chabot and worked 5min from USI and took it all for granted.

San Leandro can be ok If you get there when they open, but I have been there before opening and still not gotten spot. That and they are starting a no FMJ and no "steel-core" but they mean bimetal case. I had a discussion with them about how Steel case ammo is NOT steel core, it has bimetal cases and is not more penetrating than brass. They do not understand the distinction and do not care.

Richmond is ok, they allow AR pistols but only benched and only with the muzzle hanging off the end of the bench so you are almost lying on the bench to shoot if you have a short barrel. It kinda sucks but is ok if you just are trying to zero. They also get VERY busy on weekends so I always get there 30 min before they open.

Overall I think it is funny that the path to gun safety for the legislators in this area is to make sure there are no safe places to shoot.

RIP Chabot.

It's been discussed about opening the Richmond Rifle line for longer hours or possibly another day.. but it all boils down to getting more volunteer range officers trained to the point where we have enough staff to continually open for more days of the week.

If you are a RRGC member, part of the process is volunteering since we are an all volunteer range.. we don't mandate it like other smaller clubs. There has been talk of a members only day but still has issues with no one to run it.

Yup, I was at San Leandro on Saturday they now have large signs posted up stating no Fmj / steel core on the 100yard range. They flipped flopped a few times on the fmj regulations in the years I've been shooting there. I've not been given a concrete answer as to why they lifted the fmj requirement a year or so and now have decided to bring it back. One of the rangemasters insinuated that "rounds where going clear through the berm" (airport runway directly behind range) lol. I suspect it was brought back to lessen the crowding and stress for range employees managing sign up sheets for the 6 benched 100yard shooting positions that place has been a mad house on weekends ever sinc chabot shut down.

Don't get in hurry for USI Concord. They let the county sucker them and hard last year. Drive by it and see the mess out there. They still Do Not have the county approval as of the last Brentword Club meeting to start work, and have been closed since 16 sept 2015. They sat on any options until early 2016. It sucks the big green weenie in my not so humble point of view.

Probably a good guess.

Solution is to reuse a hollow point box / label?

Anyone tried http://www.gunsfishing.com/ in Dublin?

They're inspecting all rifle ammo before they let you shoot.

As an avid clays shooter ... Trap, wobble, doubles, handicap ... bunker ... skeet ... sporting clays ... I shoot every week and I am out there for 2-3 hours at a time ... lots of variety

If I were shooting holes in pieces of paper, I would be bored in about half an hour and could only do that once every couple of months

all I am sayin is give clays a chance
