Cool Recommendation on a semi-auto shotgun for self defense

I looked on the net what many prefer as a semi-auto shotgun. I take that its a benelli. But I also want to get your input, what you think is best bang for buck. I only need it for self defense. Don't want to be forced to use my AK or my M1 Garand to defend my home since the bullet will go thru wall.

I have nothing but great things to say about the Benelli M4. I didn't try the others, so they might be almost as good.

Theres a few man. The Benelli, not the best bang for the buck mainly because its a lot of bucks. You could get the mossberg 930 or a FN SLP. The FN is a little more expensive than the Mossberg but its a really great gun that is on par with the Benelli. Some even prefer it over the Benelli like i do. Ive owned a Benelli M4 and while it was great it wasn't worth the extra cash to me. Just my 2 cents

Grab a Saiga 12, you're already used to the ergonomics of an AK.

I've got years on a mossberg 930 and thousands of shells. It's been a solid shooter for me at a good price. Downside to some is the safety on top of the receiver. However, I like the visual indication when sighting in that the safety is off/on.

The Benelli is a great shotgun. If you have the $$ go for it. But the Mossberg has served me well.

Anything for self defense will penetrate Sheetrock. No such thing out there that doesn't. Box o truth has lots of info. Though I prefer a pump. Only semi auto I've seen that seems to be reliable is the Benelli M4. Mossberg 930 seemed to have issues at least the one ive shot frequently.

Dont know why you think a SA is the way to go.
A pump can be (relatively) as fast cyclying, and MUCH less on intitial purchase.

FN SLP or its American brother, Winchester SX3. I love my SLP, as it is super reliable. As for the whole having two pistons thing, I haven't even used the "light" piston yet. After a whole case of low-brass game loads, it may short stroke every 20th round or so, and that's with the heavy piston, which is meant to be cycled by 3" magnum loads. Also, I've never had a jam that wasn't easily cleared just by pulling back the bolt all the way or hitting the slide release button.

fastest cycling semi 12 on the market

If you want to see how fast it can really go, watch the Patrick Flanigan Winchester SX3 promotional video; he puts out 12 rounds in 1.442 seconds

All the above good.
Used Rem 1100 great value for home protection and can shoot clay as well. Let someone else break it in. Benelli, beretta, FN win and old browning good but rem 1100 is not as new and tacticool and will do the deed for le$$.

Since you want to use the Shotgun for self-defense, I'd recommend saving a bit longer and getting higher quality equipment. That said, my personal preference is the Benelli M2.
A good friend of mine has a Mossberg 930 Special purpose that also works really well and reliably.

Stoeger 2000 was mentioned - basically a Benelli System without the Benelli-induced price tag
The Winchester X3/FN platform seems to be a good Platform as well, even though I do not have any personal experience with it.
The strengths of the semi-auto are the faster rate of fire and the fact that they are easier to use when transferring shoulder-to-shoulder in ambidextrous use. It can be done with a pump, but it is a lot more difficult at the half-transfer point.

Do they make 18.5" barrels for the Winchester SX3? I did a quick look and the smallest I found was 22" rifled deer barrel. Seems most are 26".

Not knocking the SX3 (I just ordered one for trap/sproting clays). I just don't see a tactical version of it yet.

If didn't have my prized HK/Benelli I would follow the advice given... what the hell, I may pick up a Saiga 12 in the future just because.

I've got one and love it. Joe from King Armory is starting to provide aftermarket parts for them.

if you get the Mossberg 930, be sure to keep a handfull of rocks with you so you have something to throw when it fails.

ive owned a 930 SPX, and it wouldnt cycle anything, i mean ANYTHING, after 50 rounds. i bought it after getting a factory defective Mossberg 500 too. mossberg is just all bad, through my experiences and personal opinion.

IMO, i believe a pump shotgun is best for HD, not an auto-loader. if you practice you can shoot just as fast, and maybe even run off an intruder just by cocking it

My 930 SPX has 400 rounds through it so far with one failure. The only failure it had was a bad shell as the primer had been struck but it did not go off so in my book that is 400 perfect rounds. It had a break in of 100 3/34 DRAM game loads and the last 300 rounds I've shot have been cheap federal bulk pack from wally world.

My 930 is brand new though as I got it a month or so ago...I have read that the early 930s had a lot of problems.

Sorry for your bad experience with your Mossbergs, but, I truly believe you are the exception, not the rule with regard to Mossy reliability.

Handled the 930 and 590 and they felt very crude. The Benelli's action is buttery smooth, especially if they are broken-in and well taken care of. Mossbergs work well, however I am accustomed to the Ergos of Benelli.

870s are also a good option to look into. Most work, with the exception of the Express.

Mossbergs are like tough American Muscle Cars, while Benelli are like refined Italian Sports Cars.

Top M3 stays at my bedside.

I love my Benelli M4. That said, it wasn't perfect out of the box. The bolt release/shell stop was too tight. It was very difficult to speed load. The bolt release button was too small. Capacity was too low. Daves metal works fixed every problem!

It has, however, never failed to fire. Over 1k rounds of birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. Even hip fired for fun and it ran flawlessly.

I like the Remington 1100 Tac-2 12GA Tactical Shotgun. It comes with an 18" barrel, magazine extension already installed, and has a simple bead sight which I like. The Tac-4 version has a 20" barrel for those who prefer them.

I don't have any experience with them but the Mossberg 930 SPX seems pretty cool too but I prefer the one without the pistol grip stock.

My 930 loves full power, high base loads. Trying to get it to cycle bird shot / LR stuff is an act of futility. That being said, it wasn't designed for sporting clays or trap. But damn if it don't get pricy feeding it full power combat loads...
