Default Any knife smith's out there? I need some advice on building a forge. Can't decide.

I've always wanted to build a forge, but can't decide whato route to go. Watched and read quite a bit, but a lot of thealth articles seem to leave things out. I am thinking about building a small propane forge with fire bricks, but I'm not sure which rating bricks, and what type of torch head to go with.

I would build a vertical forge. A cylinder can be found cheap, most of the money will be in the koawool and satanite.

I use a horizontal made out of a 7 gallon propane tank, lined with 2 inch of wool, covered in 1/4" of satanite and then that is covered in a thin wash of ITC-100. It will reach over 2400 in about 15 mins.

The more thermal mass you have the longer it will take to heat up l, but it will hold the heat.

For a burner I would do a blown burner, they can be built dirt cheap and go as hot as you want or can do a very low flame for heat treating.

Do you want charcoal, wood, or propane?

Be sure to quench the blade in the tears of a liberal, makes the hiss that much more satisfying.

I'm planning on building a propane forge. Just waiting for the insawool, and kastolite to show up. My only concern is what kind of burn time I'm gonna get and heat. It's a dual burner, with. #72 holes.

What is the volume of your forge, and what kind of burners are you using?

It's made from a 20lb 5 gal propane tank. The burner and basic setup are made from Christ Centered Ironworks design on YouTube.

That should work great. If you want to gain a little more efficiency I would coat your refractory in some ITC-100, it is a bit pricey but well worth it in my opinion.
