Close to Poway CA VX7R, FT7800R, & FT857D Yes I prefer Yaesu radios but my next mobile will be something else with APRS built in. Various antennas NVIS on 80m only, can work 40m, 20m, & 10m I don't belong to any clubs but I do frequent the Palomar Amateur Radio Club's ham help net when I remember to turn on my radio. |

That or Icom 2820... I hear lots of bad things about Icom's mic PTT buttons. Nothing that I couldn't fix but the hassle might make looking to Kenwood a better option. I kind of like the thought of having D-star as well but who knows... I'd rather buy a new gun than a new radio right now. The old saying applies. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!

Glad to see this thread, it's good to know other Hams that have a common interest.
I'm not concerned about giving my callsign on a public forum...geesh. Congrats to all the new Hams that posted. In Wrightwood, almost 40% of the town are licensed now, including our CERT members. With the San Andreas fault running directly underneath us it couldn't hurt. I also carry my Ham HT along with the Dept. Radio while on patrol on weekends. Have had several occasions when it has worked when I couldn't get out with the brick I have to carry.

They did away with morse
Now all you need to know is how to turn the radio on.
No need to know anything about operating procedures, SWR, antennas, feedlines etc. And talking car to car on a high level repeater is taught as good operating procedure now. I hear the FCC is planning to allow a license out of a Cracker Jack box soon. 35 year Ham. Quote:

Mount the radio in your truck. By the time you get it all setup the way you want it, your callsign will be almost ready for posting on the FCC ULS website.

KF6TAC, General Class.
San Mateo County. Currently don't have a rig - it's been awhile since I've gotten on the air. Always sure to keep my license current, though.

But I have the equipment if I can remember how to use it haha. For people installing your radios in your truck. Here are some ideas. Just don't drill into the back wall, I have MDF amp rack back there that I used http://www.titantalk.com/forums/tita...o-install.html Last edited by Justintoxicated; 09-29-2009 at 8:55 PM.. |

Thanks! I'm in Ventura County / SoCal. Admittedly, passing a test for Technician level license is easy (I did so with no errors) but learning how to properly and efficiently use amateur radio will be an ongoing learning curve.

The way you get good is learning to listen to a bunch of experienced ham radio operators talk on the radio and then figuring out when is a good time to jump in and when it isn't. You just need to use that PTT button at appropriate times and get into a 5-10 min conversation with a random person on the air.

Been a ham since I was 13, mostly operate HF CW, DXing and in contests (as a guest op since my antenna is currently down). Occasionally operate 2M for air-to-air and air-to-ground comms while hang gliding. Did 1 DX-pedition to SV8 Thira Is. Tons of fun being on the other end of the pileup for a change.

hello guys

It will probably be summer when I get to the mountains again. My jeep is open so it is a little cold to take it the the snow. What frequency do you hang out on? I would like to get a little rag chew group going on hf. I don't really know anyone on hf right now. Fresnohunter What is wrong with your Yaesu? I have done alot of work on radios for me and friends and have most of the test equipment needed. Alignments, intermittent problems, no output, no receive and things like that are easy. If it is microprocessor related then I don't have the equipment for that. I don't really know of any shops around the area as I do all my own work. |

I used to hang around 3913 when I had my G5RV up... but 80 meters is hard to work mobile so I stay a bit higher now. I check into the noontime net on 7268.50 on occasion... but I mostly swing around the band looking for people. 90% is on 40 meters.
