Default U.S. small arms with 'A' added to the S.N.

For those who are just getting into U.S. issue small arms, you may find one with an 'A' added to the serial number.

(sorry for the sideways pic; I can't get it on Imagur rotated 90 degrees)

This was added by a unit armorer when two firearms were in the arms room with the same serial number. Not the same type of arm, just the same serial number.

The CMP recognizes the added 'A' as part of the firearm's serial number

This rifle is a 1945 with the original barrel. It is a Letterkenny Army depot rebuild from January of 1966. I have a fondness for LEAD as I went to school near the depot back in the early 70s.

I've personally had two CMP M1 rifles with added 'A'. The one illustrated here and a Winchester receiver with the A scratched in the parkerizing with what looked like the tip of a pocket knife. It was pretty indistinct.

I had one once too. Hey, I'll give you $100 more than you paid for it (guessing
in 2003 it was in the $300 to $400 range). Kidding aside, Those Letterkenny Rebuilds are very nice rifles.

I've heard of that before but never seen one with an added alpha character.

It would make sense to add a letter to the serial number if it was discovered that it was a duplicate serial number. It happened. CMP/DCM would recognize what ever serial number was on the rifle and the records that they have as legit. You make millions of serial numbered things and it happens. Yes it is different and interesting and I would think a bit more collectible especially if you found the other serial number (good luck) and could put them together as a pair. If I could live long enough to find a X numbered rifle I would fart and fall over as it would be my Grail of M1's. Nice rifle enjoy it.

I'm guessing the matching serial number small arm was an M1 carbine as it was the only small arm made in quantities great enough to have a serial number matching this M1 rifle. That would be something, having both the rifle and carbine with the same serial number!

The added letter "A'' means that the rifle was tested at 100 yards and the bullets fired thru that rifle would always go faster.

On Garands there were serial number overruns between manufacturers so there are M1 garands that have the same serial number between manufacturers. Winchester and springfield have these a lot. The A was added to one of the rifles to distinguish between the rifles
I have an A marked winchester in my safe.

I'm not sure about garands but on an enfield the "A" after a serial number denotes non standard parts were used in the rifle and the rifle cannot be serviced with standard parts.
